Associate Registrar

The Museum of Modern Art is currently accepting applications for an Associate Registrar in its Collection Management and Exhibition Registration Department. Reporting to the Senior Registrar, Collections, the Associate Registrar works independently and collaboratively on outgoing loans for objects of all mediums to domestic and international institutions with responsibility for logistical arrangements pertaining to coordination, packing, transportation, customs clearance, and courier needs (travel, hotel, per diem); acts as courier, as needed.

 

Additional responsibilities include:

  • Prepares collection works for outgoing loan, creates and updates condition reports on objects of all mediums, consulting with Conservation as needed.
  • Organizes monthly meetings to review courier needs; participates in courier training and selection.
  • Issues cross-departmental Borrower’s Agreements. Creates, compiles, and maintains all related documentation, including packing and installation instructions.  Reviews facility reports, proposed vendors, and routing; organizes packing and contacts crating companies.
  • Acts as liaison between Conservation and crating companies for specific packing needs.
  • Collaborates with Exhibition Planning and Administration on proposed insurance coverage for loans. Ensures Immunity from Seizure documentation is in place.
  • Trains new department members on assigned responsibilities.
  • Maintains permanent archive of assigned projects for the Museum Collection and/or exhibitions.
  • Performs any other duties reasonably related to the functions described above.

 

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree or bachelor of fine arts degree, and minimum five years related experience managing progressively more complex registration projects, preferably in an art museum with ambitious exhibitions, acquisitions, and outgoing loan programs, or equivalent.
  • General knowledge of 20th-century art and familiarity with artists’ materials is also required, including facility with time-based media objects.
  • Strong detail orientation, with demonstrated ability to manage more than one active project concurrently.
  • Proven organizational skills needed to coordinate complicated domestic and international projects.
  • Must have aptitude to work both relatively autonomously as well as to anticipate the needs of the team.
  • Ability to work in a high volume, fast paced environment.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Knowledge of and facility with various data management systems. Experience with The Museum System.
  • The Museum participates in the TSA’s Certified Cargo Screening Facility Program. Therefore, any individual hired must successfully complete a security threat assessment through the Department of Homeland Security in order to participate.

 

Salary: The salary for this position is $97,271 (gross) per annum
