Job Description

The Museum of Modern Art is currently accepting applications for an Assistant Exhibition Designer.

Reporting to the Director of Exhibition Design and Production (ED&P), the incumbent develops designs for art spaces from concept to installation for the Museum’s Exhibition and Learning and Engagement program.
This is a three-year, fixed-term position.

Additional responsibilities include:

  • Assists with designs and project manages the Art Lab and Creativity Lab installations for the Learning and Engagement (L&E) Department and for other L&E based exhibition projects, in addition to small temporary Museum exhibitions, including the layout of objects, exhibition furniture, display cases, and media environments.
  • Employs various visualization techniques (drawing, 3-D rendering, model making) and works collaboratively with Curatorial and L&E staff on related designs.
  • Assists ED&P’s Exhibition Designers in implementing the design process from concept through production, creating construction documents, and overseeing in-house and contracted building crews and fabricators to meet production schedules on time and within budget.
  • Works collaboratively and efficiently with key internal departments, including curatorial, L&E, Registrar, Conservation, Exhibition Planning and Administration, Graphic Design, A/V, Security, and Visitor Engagement, as well as outside contractors.
  • Creates art spaces that consider and engage the visitor and devises creative solutions for the responsible display of art.
  • Performs any other duties reasonably related to the functions described above.


  • Bachelor’s degree in art or a design-related field and three years progressively responsible experience in exhibition design, architecture, set design, industrial design, or equivalent.
  • Exceptional organizational skills and strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to efficiently manage several projects simultaneously at various phases.
  • Ability to form and maintain successful working relationships with museum staff, designers, and artists.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, Photoshop, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint), and other standard office procedures and equipment. Knowledge of a 3-D rendering program is a plus.
  • Knowledge of 20th- and 21st-century art is preferred.
  • MoMA participates in the TSA’s Certified Cargo Screening Facility Program. Therefore, if hired, individual must successfully complete a security threat assessment through the Department of Homeland Security in order to participate.

Salary range: Minimum of $57,000 to maximum of $73,500 per annum.
