Job Description

The Museum of Modern Art is currently accepting applications for a Painter.

Under the supervision of the Painter Foreperson, and working as part of a four-person in-house crew (and occasionally with larger crews as needed), the Painter is responsible for cooperatively addressing the Museum’s multiple painting, taping, and repair needs, including painting of galleries and art display fixtures, as well as offices, public spaces, and all auxiliary spaces on Museum premises.
Works with the staff of the Exhibition Design and Production and Building Operations departments on multiple projects within tight schedules.


  • Interacts with building occupants at all levels to execute painting assignments with maximum efficiency and quality.
  • Assists the Painter Foreperson in maintaining a well-organized inventory of all Museum supplies as needed for both gallery and building maintenance.
  • Cooperates with the other trades (Carpentry, Electrical, Art Handling and Preparation, Audio Visual) to perform on–site work safely and within schedule.
  • Performs any other related duties as assigned by management.


  • Two to five years professional experience as a painter within the building trades.
  • Working knowledge of all accepted building trades methods of commercial paint application, including knowledge of all standard materials.
  • Ability to prep and prime walls with standard joint compound and various fillers and sealers. Some knowledge of industrial spray painting.
  • Ability to prepare and paint surface of walls, platforms, ceilings, and furniture; and mix material used as paints, stains, varnishes, enamels, and lacquers.
  • Experience making minor plastering repairs to walls and ceilings using brushes, spray guns, and paint rollers as required.
  • Ability to remove old paint or rust using lye bath, sanding machine, or other methods, and to clean tools and equipment after use.
  • Ability to operate lifts required to perform painting tasks.
  • Considerable knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions of the work.
  • Demonstrated ability to climb ladders and work in confined spaces above and below ground.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time; exhibit manual dexterity to operate equipment; understand oral and written instructions; lift materials; and bend, stoop, and reach overhead.
  • A special note: A great deal of work will be done within the Museum’s galleries, spaces that contain invaluable works of art. The Painter must be personally careful, vigilant and aware to ensure that surfaces are protected and that the art is never compromised.
  • Fully vaccinated with a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and/or the World Health Organization authorized vaccine (or approved for an exemption as a reasonable accommodation due to a qualified disability or sincerely held religious belief or other legal basis).

Reports to:
Foreperson Painter, Associate Director, Building Operations and/or Senior Production Manager

This position is covered by the collective bargaining agreement between the Museum and the International Brotherhood of Painters and Allied Trades, Local 1456 (“Union”).  New hires will be required to become members of the union, assuming they are not members already.
