Technical Director

 

Summary of Position:

The Technical Director is responsible for the daily technical operations of the theatre including all scenic and paint construction, installation, and maintenance. The TD is responsible for the hiring and onboarding of all scenic team members. An ideal candidate communicates clearly and efficiently, manages multiple productions and events in different phases of completion, and can successfully lead employees to complete their tasks efficiently and safely.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Oversee all technical aspects of productions with a primary focus on building, painting, installing, and striking scenic elements
  • Advise Production Manager on the technical specifications, construction costs and usage of technical equipment required for the individual projects and supervise the implementation of approved technical designs
  • Create and distribute build drawings to scenic staff for all constructed elements
  • Supervise and assist with scenic construction to insure support of the artistic vision within the limitations of schedule, labor, and budget
  • Determine the necessary technical support in collaboration with other production departments, including lighting, sound, stage management, and all special needs necessary for productions in advance of production dates
  • Attend meetings and rehearsals as needed, to supervise and assist in the technical aspects of mounting successful productions
  • Assist with the preparation and control of annual scenic budgets; maintain inventory and order specialized scenic supplies
  • Administrative tasks include scenic budget creation, expense tracking and allocation
  • Assist in recruiting, onboarding, training, and assignment of technical staff
  • Provide logistical support for facility rentals and visiting productions regarding safety, technical characteristics, and other areas of facility operations
  • Monitor the condition of equipment and technical assets of the theatre including scene shop, storage, stage, and rigging equipment; arrange for the repair and replacement within budgetary constraints; perform preventive maintenance on equipment
  • Recommend purchases of technical equipment
  • Other duties as assigned

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent work experience
  • 5 years of Technical Direction experience in professional theatrical organizations
  • Experience forming and managing relationships with visiting artists, staff, and overhire
  • Advanced knowledge of theatrical rigging 
  • Advanced knowledge of ACAD or Vectorworks
  • Excellent time management, organization, and administrative skills
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite and Outlook

 

Physical Demands

  • Able to lift at least 50 pounds
  • Able to perform physical activities such as, but not limited to lifting and bending, as well as climbing ladders
  • Ability to work from heights(ladders, scaffolding, and lifts)

Compensation Rate:

Nantucket Performing Arts Center strives to design equitable compensation programs. The projected salary range for this position is $1,500/wk , commensurate with experience with on island housing provided. This is the targeted range of possible compensation for this role at the time of posting. This range may be modified in the future. Base pay within the range is ultimately determined by a candidate’s skills, expertise, and experience as it relates to the position qualifications and responsibilities.
