Job Description

SUMMARY:

Reporting to the Director of Production, the Sound and Projections Supervisor coordinates and runs sound and projection calls, supervises student workers and designers, and manages equipment for the Department of Theatre and Dance. A typical 14-week semester includes three mainstage productions, three studio productions, and class-based and student-led performance projects. In collaboration with the Sound Faculty Coordinator, the Sound and Projections Supervisor supports all sound and projection components of departmental activities.

 

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Organize, schedule, and supervise all sound and projection calls, ensuring adequate staff coverage and determining hiring needs in coordination with the Director of Production.
  • Serve as the Lead Technician for all Theatre and Dance departmental productions in Main Stage, Black Box, and Studio venues, including attendance at all related production meetings.
  • Work with the Sound Design Mentor and Sound/Projection Designers to determine equipment needs, feasibility, and budget management, including rental packages and equipment logistics.
  • Partner with the CART Performance Operations (CPO) team to track and manage the inventory of all sound and projection equipment in performance venues.
  • Assist with the execution of projection technology for production and classroom needs in collaboration with the CART Technology team.
  • Maintain essential records and files.
  • Function as a technician for special campus events.
  • Participate in venue improvements, maintenance/upkeep, and repairs.
  • Serve as the Instructor of Record for THTR 205: Rehearsal and Production each semester and provide hands-on instruction to students through direct involvement in departmental productions.
  • Work collaboratively with other technical teams to ensure successful productions.
  • Attend technical/dress rehearsals and performances as scheduled
  • Cultivate a positive and supportive learning environment for student designers and technical workers.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Management retains the right to add or change job duties at any time.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

REQUIRED:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Minimum three years of professional experience in theatrical sound and projections.
  • Proficiency with:
    • Digital audio consoles and mixing (line by line) for theatrical productions.
    • QLab (audio and video), DAWs, Isadora, and emerging sound/projection software.
    • Wireless Workbench, FreeSpeak, and Dante networking.
    • Projection systems and media servers.
    • Vectorworks and other theatrical drafting programs.
  • Strong A1 skills including the ability to mix line by line for musicals and plays.
  • A2 skills including microphone rigging, troubleshooting, and frequency coordination.
  • Experience supervising multitrack and two-track audio recording of theatrical performances.
  • Ability to collaborate with Directors and Musical Directors to integrate creative input.
  • Rigging and counterweight fly system proficiency.
  • Ability to work at heights, use aerial lifts, and climb ladders.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Commitment to creating a supportive, open, and respectful working environment.
  • Availability to work evenings and weekends as required by production schedule.

 

PREFERRED:

  • MFA or equivalent terminal degree from an accredited college or university in Sound Design, Projection Design, or related field.
  • Professional experience in an educational production environment.
  • Student mentorship experience.
  • OSHA 10, ETCP Rigging Theater, OSHA Lift Training, and/or First Aid Training certifications.
  • Familiarity with inclusive teaching practices.
  • General understanding of current best health and safety practices within the US Theatre Industry.

Salary Range: $73,899.90-$81,286.80 Annually
