Print Studio Assistant
The Athenaeum Music and Arts Library seeks a full-time Print Studio Assistant to join the Athenaeum Art Center team in Logan Heights. The Print Studio Assistant has the primary responsibility for the setup and breakdown of various Athenaeum Art Center events, including open print studio and press rentals and other workshops. The Print Studio Assistant must be willing to commit to a schedule in advance, work effectively independently, and make thoughtful decisions quickly during events, classes, and open print studio hours.
Must have availability Tuesday–Saturday. Must have access to reliable transportation and have a valid California driver’s license. Compensation: $23–$26 per hour, commensurate with experience. 30 hours per week guaranteed. This position is supported in part by a generous grant from the Prebys Foundation.
Responsibilities:
- Open and close the print studio according to posted schedules and operational needs.
- Maintain the cleanliness, safety, and organization of the studio, including work surfaces, equipment, and communal areas.
- Monitor all studio activity to ensure adherence to safety protocols and studio policies.
- Provide technical support and equipment oversight during classes, workshops, and studio rentals.
- Assist instructors with classroom setup, breakdown, and preparation of materials.
- Support renters and members with questions or guidance regarding proper use of tools and machinery.
- Track and restock materials and consumables; maintain accurate inventory and notify supervisor of low supplies.
- Submit maintenance requests or incident reports for damaged tools, unsafe conditions, or facility concerns.
- Respond to work-related email and communication in a timely, professional manner.
- Maintain up-to-date studio scheduling in collaboration with education staff and instructors.
- Greet and assist studio visitors; foster a positive, welcoming environment for artists and the public.
- Perform other duties as assigned in support of instructors, teaching artists, or organizational programming.
Qualifications:
- In-depth knowledge and passion for letterpress, with hands-on experience operating various printmaking equipment.
- Strong organizational and multitasking skills to efficiently manage studio sessions.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to effectively engage with artists and uphold safety standards.
- Ability to lift 50lbs comfortably, as it is a requirement for the role.
- Detail-oriented mindset with a commitment to maintaining a clean and organized print studio.
- Comfortability with Microsoft Office technology for managing schedules, reservations, and communication.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a creative environment.
- Flexibility to work evenings and weekends based on studio needs.
- Customer-service oriented mindset with the ability to meet the needs of diverse stakeholders, creating a welcoming environment for first-time visitors as well as regular users of the Print Studio.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Previous experience in a letterpress studio or a similar setting.
- Familiarity with various printing techniques and processes.
