Job Description
• Title: Performance Faculty – Theater Arts Department
• Job Goal: Experienced instructor with expertise to teach Acting and a secondary specialty in Movement/ Musical Theater/Acting for Camera or other Theatre performance study) to specialty majors in their preparation to pursue the Theatre Arts.
• Reports to: Chair, Theatre Arts Department
Performance Responsibilities:
- Teach courses in multiple areas of performance to students in grades 7–12, including middle school.
- Direct up to two departmental productions per year, at the discretion of the Department Chair.
- Help shape, develop, and refine the performance curriculum within the faculty member’s area of expertise.
- Participate fully in the daily operations of the Theatre Arts Department, including weekly meetings, competition preparation, rehearsals, and after-hours trips.
- Maintain regular office hours and be available on campus to students by 10:00 a.m. daily.
- Serve as a department competition coach for acting students, preparing them for State Trumbauer and Thespians competitions, which require participation in two weekends per year.
- Serve as Thespians Troupe Leader, at the discretion of the Department Chair.
- Collaborate closely with faculty across disciplines to support a multi-disciplined, dynamic, and student-centered approach to theatre and performance.
- Demonstrate a strong understanding of theatre pedagogy and assessment practices appropriate for young artists.
- Maintain a clear, organized, and detailed online classroom using department-preferred platforms such as Google Classroom and PowerSchool.
- Exhibit excellent interpersonal and communication skills with students, faculty, and staff.
- Assist students with college advisement, auditions, and preparation for admission to conservatories, theatre programs, and performing arts careers.
- Actively assist with student recruitment for the Theatre Arts Department, at the discretion of the Department Chair.
- Establish and maintain clear standards of student behavior that foster a supportive, respectful, and inclusive learning environment.
- Effectively use and communicate through internal technologies, including email, web-based content/document management systems, and grade reporting tools.
- Embrace new and emerging technologies and demonstrate a willingness to become proficient in their use.
- Work collaboratively with other instructors to facilitate flexible scheduling, including test dates and class attendance, in support of student success.
- Demonstrate a strong commitment to teamwork and adherence to a prescribed departmental curriculum.
- Engage in ongoing professional development, demonstrating professional ethics, leadership, and artistic growth.
- Attend after-school rehearsals, auditions, and performances as scheduled multiple times throughout the year, including some weekends.
- Attend and provide adult leadership and support for school performances and student functions, including (but not limited to) specialty productions, concerts, student retreats, school dances, student council events, prom, graduation, audition interviews, and related activities.
Qualifications:
- Minimum of three (3) years of high school or university-level teaching experience.
- BFA or MFA (preferred) in Theatre, with a specialization in Acting, Acting for the Camera, Movement, or other Theatre related performance areas.
- Significant professional experience as a performer/director.
- Demonstrated experience as a director.
- Experience in African American Theatre Studies, Latinx Theatre Studies, or Non-Western theatre traditions (preferred).
- Experience working with young artists of varying skill levels and diverse backgrounds (preferred).
- Such alternatives to the above qualifications as ASFA may find appropriate and acceptable.
Salary: ASFA Teaching Salary based on Degree and Experience
