Job Description

Opera Lafayette is the pre-eminent American interpreter and producer of period-instrument opera from the 17th through the 19th centuries.  The organization performs its annual season in Washington, DC and in New York, NY in a festival format, offering a unique work environment with a small and highly collaborative staff.  Opera Lafayette maintains office space in Washington, DC and New York City and offers flexible and remote work opportunities, though ease of accessibility to both cities is preferred.



The Marketing Assistant will work with leadership to develop and implement annual and long-term strategies for programmatic and institutional marketing, and to coordinate marketing efforts around Opera Lafayette’s season programming, community engagement, and development activities in both Washington, DC and New York City. This individual will also be responsible for creating marketing materials and copy for email and social media and for implementing marketing strategies, in consultation with Opera Lafayette leadership and marketing consultants. This position has the potential to become full-time.



In collaboration with OL’s leadership, marketing consultants and external PR firm(s):

  • Plan and implement marketing campaigns that support OL’s mission and connect OL with new audiences.
  • Coordinate the production of on-brand print collateral materials, including season brochures, post cards, program books, invitations, other collaterals as required
  • Create pitch stories and press releases for media outlets
  • Ensure adherence to production schedule for all print and digital assets; work with marketing consultant to coordinate on-time delivery of ads and collaterals
  • Develop and monitor metrics which measure the reach and impact of OL’s print and digital communications
  • Coordinate with Community Engagement and Development to develop regular and consistent messaging
  • Monitor and adhere to the budget
  • Create strategies to grow OL’s email list



  • Bachelor’s degree and two years of communications, public relations, or marketing experience
  • Clear, concise, and grammatically excellent communication skills (verbal and written)
  • Ability to create new opportunities and build partnerships across diverse populations
  • Strong copywriting, proofreading, and editing skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Passion for, and knowledge of opera is highly desirable
  • New hires must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19
