Job Description
JOB OPENING
Director, Rockefeller Arts Center
State University of New York at Fredonia
The State University of New York (SUNY) at Fredonia seeks a creative, accomplished and entrepreneurial leader for its Michael C. Rockefeller Arts Center (RAC), a four-venue, two-gallery complex that has been serving Western New York and Northwest Pennsylvania for over 55 years. Built in 1969 and designed by I.M. Pei and Partners, the center is the original and oldest arts center in the 64-campus SUNY System.
Situated halfway between Buffalo NY and Erie PA, RAC comprises a 1146-seat concert hall, a 369-seat proscenium theatre, a 200-seat black box, a 99-seat 3,000 square foot dance theatre/studio with retractable seats, and two art galleries. The building is home to the Department of Theatre and Dance (233 majors) and the Department of Visual Arts and New Media (218 majors) and contains numerous departmental studios, rehearsal rooms, shops and offices. Fredonia’s School of Music (474 majors) is housed in the adjacent Mason Hall which has two additional recital halls managed by the School of Music. Within RAC, over 130 events are presented annually by the center and some 20 academic departments, student groups and community organizations. Academic department usage accounts for the majority of events annually.
As an administrative unit of the campus, RAC is the primary campus presenter of visiting artists and ensembles. Established guest artist programming consists of a family series (2-3 visiting companies per year, currently on hiatus), a K-6 on-school-time series (2-3 companies per year with multiple performances) and the center’s flagship pops series (3 events annually including a center-produced commencement-eve concert that serves as a showcase for students from Fredonia’s voice, jazz and musical theatre programs). Occasional special events, not on any series, are also presented. These have included the country’s premiere military bands, dance companies and chamber music ensembles.
In addition, RAC provides a robust spectrum of supporting services to all users of the facility. These include scheduling, technical support, ticketing, front-of-house operations, a centralized mailing and marketing/ticketing/fundraising database, publishing of playbills for major ticketed events, distributing a portion of donated income from the center’s “Friends of RAC” annual fund to arts departments, and assistance with securing corporate sponsorships.
Positions reporting to Director include full-time Technical Director/Operations Manager, a full-time Ticket Office Manager, a full-time Administrative Assistant (shared with the ticket office), and a half-time Front-of-House Coordinator. In addition, a full-time Public Relations Assistant from the campus Department of Marketing and Communications is assigned to service the marketing and publications needs of the center.
Reporting to the Vice President for University Advancement, the Director will be responsible for overseeing the administration, programming, and operations of the center. The major areas of responsibility include Leadership and Strategic Planning; Programming & Artistic Direction; Fundraising; Staff Management & Development; Marketing & External Relations; Financial Mangement; and Academic Program Support.
A master’s degree in Arts Administration or a similar degree is required.
The salary range for this position is $94,510 commensurate with experience.
