About Greenville Theatre:
Founded in 1926, Greenville Theatre is the Upstate’s oldest and largest locally producing non-profit theatre company. Now celebrating 101 years, Greenville Theatre’s Mission is to inspire, educate, entertain, and connect our community through necessary art and storytelling. The company produces 6 mainstage “GT Broadway Series” shows and 2 “GT Off-Broadway” productions a year. In addition to productions, the company also hosts specialty events, concerts and fundraisers throughout the season. Located on Heritage Greene, the cultural campus to downtown Greenville, GT owns its 1967 building which has a 571-seat proscenium auditorium. Greenville Theatre is known for celebrating and working with local actors, directors, choreographers, designers, musicians, and artists in the Upstate area, producing Broadway-calibur shows, and creating an environment that welcomes the entire Upstate community.

Position Overview:
The company is seeking a mission focused and community forward individual who enjoys lifting local creatives and guiding artistic vision. The Artistic Director will be responsible for theatrical programming and creative leadership for the organization. They maintain and uphold the artistic standards across all productions through kindness, teamwork, collaboration, trust, and respect. They will serve as a key member of the senior leadership team in collaboration with the Executive Director on donor relations, marketing, and brand representation. This is primarily an evening position for rehearsals, tech and curtain speeches with additional weekend commitment for casting, outreach, and rehearsals. This individual must have a strong love, appreciation, and understanding of musical theatre and straight plays. They must believe in the power of live theatrical storytelling and its impact on a community.
Productions typically rehearse Monday-Friday 7pm-10:30pm, with Saturdays off, and Sunday rehearsals from 1pm-6pm. The performance schedule runs Thursday-Sunday with 7:30pm evening shows, Saturday matinees at 2pm (when applicable), and Sunday matinees at 3pm. Musicals tend to rehearse between 7-8 weeks leading up to opening and plays tend to rehearse 5-6 weeks depending on the demands of each show. Tech is typically done over a 2 week process including spacing, implementing running crew, and adding each technical element (lighting, costume, sound design).
Key Responsibilities:
- Design season show selections
- Oversee technical and artistic staff
- Hire all guest creative team members
- Collaborate with creative teams and designers to ensure artistic integrity
- Direct a minimum of 4 productions a season
- Create all rehearsal and production calendars
- Casting oversight
- Support education and outreach initiatives
- Deliver curtain speeches with Executive Director
- Balance artistic ambition with fiscal responsibility
- Report to the Board annually (as needed)
- Uphold the mission, vision and core values of the company
- Champion kindness, inclusion, diversity, and equity behind the scenes and on the stage

Key Qualifications:
Education
- Bachelor’s Degree in Director, Musical Theatre, Acting, or a related theatre arts field
Experience
- Wealth of theatrical repertoire knowledge in musicals and plays
- Extensive directorial experience in musical theatre and straight plays
- Experience managing creative teams and designers
- Artistic management experience
- Dramaturgy
- Public Speaking
- Background working in regional and/or non-profit theatre settings

Compensation & Benefits:

Working Conditions:
- Must reside in or relocate to the Upstate of South Carolina (Moving Stipend included)
