The Greenville Symphony Orchestra seeks an Executive Director to work in partnership with a volunteer Board of Directors and Music Director Edvard Tchivzhel to develop and implement the strategic plan that both sustains the current level of operations and drives the organization forward in an orderly manner, following its long-term strategic plan.
Reporting to the President of the Board, the Executive Director serves as the chief operating officer and is responsible for financial planning and human resources; marketing and fundraising activities; and education and community relations. The Executive Director leads a staff of nine which includes the directors of marketing, development, operations and orchestra personnel, and education, as well as the controller and the office manager.
The Executive Director is also the key liaison with the Board in order to achieve the organization’s mission. To this end, the Executive Director is the team leader responsible for all non-musical aspects of the organization including: strategic and operational planning, business development, budgeting, partnerships, and interaction with the Peace Center and other venues.
The GSO is a Group 4 orchestra, with an annual budget of $2.4 million.
The Greenville Symphony Orchestra is a regional orchestra that performs classical orchestral repertoire, as well as innovative musical offerings, with approximately 34 public concerts annually. Its primary venue is the Peace Center for the Performing Arts.
The GSO is led by the internationally acclaimed maestro, Edvard Tchivzhel, who serves as Music Director and Conductor. Yo-Yo Ma, after performing with the GSO in 2004, wrote: “Maestro Tchivzhel is, simply put, a master…his music-making is indisputably commanding and communicative.” Serving as Music Director since 1999, Maestro Tchivzhel has become an iconic figure in the Greenville community and a motivational force behind its orchestra.
Founded in 1948, the GSO is considered an exceptional orchestra, providing concerts of the highest artistic and professional standards. It is a per service orchestra with eleven salaried musicians. Annual concert attendance is approximately 30,000. The annual season includes the six-concert Masterworks Series at the Peace Center Concert Hall (2,100 seats), the four-concert Chamber Orchestra Series at the Gunter Theatre (400 seats), and the three-concert Spotlight Series at the Centre Stage Theatre (280 seats), as well as special holiday and community events. The GSO partners with a variety of community groups including the International Ballet and The Greenville Chorale.
Education and community engagement have been an important part of the GSO’s mission since the first children’s concert was presented in 1951. Every year, GSO musicians present free concerts and programs for nearly 30,000 students in the region. GSO has an active Guild, a young professionals group, a gourmet club, and an Advisory Council.
The GSO is currently working with Steven Bronfenbrenner of Bronfenbrenner Consulting Group/B Squared Consulting on developing strategic and tactical plans to advance the orchestra during a period of change. The focus of this work is leveraging the organization’s strong reputation for artistic excellence and community service, sustaining GSO’s financial capacity and sustainability, and building strong governance and management resources. This project should be completed in the first quarter of 2017.
