The City of Rancho Cucamonga’s Community Services Department is seeking a dynamic, creative, and collaborative Programming and Events Supervisor to lead initiatives that inspire, entertain, and enrich our community. As the Programming & Events Supervisor, you’ll have the exciting opportunity to shape and oversee innovative programming in our newly activated outdoor courtyard space—developing year-round performances that drive community connection, expand our audience, and bring energy to our spaces. You’ll also collaborate closely on season programming and artist engagement alongside the Entertainment Superintendent.

In addition, you’ll lead the Rentals Team responsible for overseeing all event bookings—from weddings, galas, and community functions in our event hall to performance rentals in the Lewis Family Playhouse, Black Box Theatre, and new Courtyard stage. This includes evaluating rental alignment with our artistic and financial goals, ensuring top-tier guest experience, and maintaining a well-balanced, strategically scheduled calendar.

About the Lewis Family Playhouse at Victoria Gardens Cultural Center:

The Lewis Family Playhouse is an intimate, state-of-the-art performing arts center with 560 seats owned and operated by the City of Rancho Cucamonga. As a major anchor to the Victoria Gardens Lifestyle Shopping Center, the Lewis Family Playhouse educates, entertains, and ignites the imagination through high-quality performances for children, families, and audiences of all ages throughout Southern California. In addition to the Lewis Family Playhouse, the Victoria Gardens Cultural Center includes a 60-seat Black Box Theatre, large-scale event spaces, and an outdoor courtyard stage opening in 2025!

Working for the City of Rancho Cucamonga:

This role is deeply rooted in the performing arts and events world. You’ll be based at the beautiful Lewis Family Playhouse at the Victoria Gardens Cultural Center, working across multiple spaces to bring dynamic programming and high-quality events to life. Some qualifications reference community services and recreation, but you could be the ideal fit if your background is in performing arts programming, community-driven events, and delivering outstanding guest experiences. We’re excited to consider all candidates who bring creativity, drive, and a love for the arts.

YOU’LL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR:

Courtyard Programming & Community Events

• Curate and implement regular outdoor performances and community-focused events that activate the courtyard space and draw a broad audience.

• Source and contract local and regional talent for free or low-cost entertainment options.

• Use your creative voice to bring new ideas and energy to our year-round calendar.

Season Programming Support

• Assist the Entertainment Superintendent with curation and logistics for our Playhouse season.

• Support artist outreach, deal negotiation, contracts, and production coordination.

• Provide artistic input that helps ensure our programming is balanced, strategic, and bold.

• Help manage relationships with visiting productions and local producing partners and ensure alignment with community and financial goals.

• Coordinate with the production and hospitality teams to ensure rider needs, technical requirements, and artist services are feasible, within budget, and executed to high standards.

• Attend production meetings, rehearsals, and performances when needed to support quality and consistency across events.

Rentals Oversight & Events Management

• Supervise the Rentals Team, overseeing all performance and non-performance bookings.

• Ensure rental schedules are balanced with programming priorities and venue capacity.

• Provide artistic and operational guidance on how performance rentals align with the overall season.

• Lead your team in achieving rental goals while delivering a premier client experience.

• Engage with local groups and clients to increase community and commercial rental bookings.

Collaboration & Communication

• Coordinate with Box Office, Marketing, Production, Finance, Front of House, and other departments to ensure rental and event success.

• Participate in planning meetings, site walkthroughs, and client consultations as needed.

• Represent the Playhouse at local arts events, showcases, conferences, and networking opportunities.

The Ideal Candidate Has:

• A background in arts programming, event management, and/or venue operations.

• Strong organizational skills and ability to manage complex calendars and overlapping timelines.

• Knowledge of artist contracts, performance riders, and rental agreements.

• Familiarity with artistic genres from theater and music to festivals and community showcases.

• A creative spark for designing unique, accessible, and impactful arts experiences.

• A people-first mindset when working with artists, clients, and community groups.

• Excellent communication skills and a proactive, collaborative leadership style.

• The flexibility to work evenings and weekends, attending performances, rehearsals, and events.

ARE YOU QUALIFIED

Graduation from an accredited college with a Bachelor’s degree in recreation or a related field and three years of experience in the implementation of cultural and recreation activities and programs or any combination of training and experience that provides the desired knowledge and abilities.

Substitution:
A total of seven years of professional-level experience  in the implementation of cultural and recreation activities and programs may substitute for the bachelor’s degree requirement.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 
Knowledge of the theories, principles, practices, and programs common to the field of recreation and cultural programs, community center operations and management; principles of supervision; first aid methods and safety practices related to recreational program planning and evaluation; methods for identifying community recreation needs. Ability to effectively work with people having varied socio-economic standings; prepare and present concise written and oral reports; supervise, train, and evaluate staff; plan, promote and implement recreation and Community Services programs; analyze unusual situations and resolve through application of policy; deal constructively with conflict and develop effective resolutions.

Special Requirements: 
Possession of or ability to obtain an appropriate California driver’s license and a satisfactory driving record. Depending on the assignment, first aid and CPR certification may be required.
 
PHYSICAL DEMANDS 
Frequent standing and sitting. Dexterity and coordination to handle files and single pieces of paper; occasional lifting of items weighing up to twenty-five pounds such as files, stacks of paper, reference and other materials. Moving from place to place within the office; some reaching for items above and below desk level. Strength, dexterity, coordination and vision to use keyboard and video display terminal occasionally.


WORKING CONDITIONS
Generally clean work environment with limited exposure to conditions such as dust, fumes, odors, or noise. Travel throughout the City is required. Work schedule may include many evenings and weekends.
