Job Description

The Department of Cinematic Arts and Theatre at the University of North Alabama invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor in the BFA Cinematic Arts and Theatre degree program beginning in fall 2023. This appointment is for a nine-month academic schedule.

The University of North Alabama is the state’s oldest public university and sits on a beautiful 130-acre campus in historic Florence, Alabama.  Florence is located within a four-city area on the banks of the Tennessee River known as the Shoals, which is steeped in arts, culture, and entertainment—and is home to the famous Muscle Shoals sound.

The successful candidate will teach a 12-hour course load each fall and spring semester – experience in online teaching or a willingness to learn how to develop and teach online courses is required. Expectations also include: teaching various levels of acting and directing courses (which may include Acting for the Camera, Movement for the Stage, Script Analysis, Directing, and Beginning to Advanced Acting); directing cinematic/theatrical productions which foster growth of the current student body, in consultation with technical theatre instructors and the technical director and assistant technical director of Norton Auditorium; developing and maintaining an agenda of research and/or creative activities relevant in the field; performing recruiting activities for the department and program; performing student advising duties; assisting in supervising production aspects associated with the program’s performance season; mentoring students in the department and program; contributing to program curriculum development; managing program equipment and facilities; providing service to the department, college, university, and community/profession; and fostering diversity and inclusion among program students. This position will also require the selected candidate to assist students with practicum/teaching projects. These projects are a part of the academic curriculum and can be off-campus film productions and/or theatre performances. These performances also require rehearsals, which may be conducted outside of “normal” business hours.

A terminal degree in theatre (acting or directing) is required (MFA or PhD) and ABD candidates may be considered. Experience in teaching acting, directing, dramatic literature, and/or various forms of theatre history is preferred.
