TECHNICAL DIRECTOR

This 9-month Technical Director Position is responsible for overseeing, managing and scheduling all technical aspects the Viking Theatre related to theatre productions and theatre rentals. The Technical Director will also manage and mentor work-study students who work in the shops and stage crews for productions. Degree in technical theatre preferred, degree in another area of theatre with 3 years of technical theatre experience will also be considered. Knowledge of scenic construction, stage lighting, properties construction and basic sound board required. Special consideration will be given to candidates who have design experience in one or more areas of design in addition to technical theatre expertise. There is the opportunity to teach stagecraft and/or design courses based on experience. A collaborative spirit, sense of humor and strong organizational skills are highly desirable. Position runs Mid-August 2023 through Mid-May 2024.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF JOB

  • Oversee, manage and schedule all technical elements (scenic, lighting and sound) for theatre productions and external events held in the Viking Theatre
  • Maintain and improve scene shop, light shop and theatre storage areas
  • Hold regular shop hours and mentor student workers in technical theatre
  • Maintain a safe work environment for student workers and theatrical participants
  • Order supplies for theatre productions and maintain stock of essential supplies in shops
  • Maintain financial records and budgets for productions
  • Organize each semester’s production calendar and communicate with the Director of Conferencing about external events in the Viking Theatre.

 

QUALIFICATIONS and REQUIREMENTS

  • Scenic Construction (possible design)
  • Basic Lighting and light board experience (possible design)
  • Working knowledge of basic sound board (possible design)
  • Properties Construction
  • Ability to work on a deadline, according to production calendar

 

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Irregular hours- weekends and nights as needed
  • Use of power tools
  • Lifting large and heavy objects and scenic elements
  • Climbing ladders and scaffolding
  • Climbing into and bending down in the grid

 

This position is a 9-month position from mid-August 2023 through mid-May 2024, and will have irregular hours based upon theatre production schedule. There is a possibility for additional hours during the summer months in the area of general conferencing, but no guarantee. If the candidate comes with the skills and experience to teach classes, or an MFA in theatre, the upper range of the salary range will be considered. Full benefits are included.
