Technical Director & Facility Manager

Job Description

This position is responsible for overseeing all technical elements related to the theatre as well as oversight of rehearsals and productions to ensure technical elements of events run smoothly. This position requires a working knowledge of the maintenance and preservation of historical venues. They are responsible for the general cleanliness of the building, as well as the physical, mechanical, and technological well-being of the facility.

PLEASE NOTE: As our organization grows, we do conceptualize that these positions will be separated, but currently has been done by one candidate and thus are first looking to hire in the same way.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

A. Technical Direction & Production Management

a. Review technical riders and production contracts and advise Executive Director with regards to equipment or services requested by artists or renting organizations.

b. Ensure technical aspects of productions are properly advanced in a timely manner and that technical rider requirements as outlined in the contract are met when an artist or renter arrives in the theatre.

c. Oversee contracted sound/lighting engineers and/or stage crew during all rehearsals and performances.

d. Serve as a sound or lighting engineer at the request of management or renting organization.

e. Hire additional sound and/or lighting staff as needed or upon request from artist or renting organization, as per contracts.

f. Assist with load-in, load-out, set-up and strike as needed or requested.

B. Facility Management

a. Ensure that the above-mentioned items are in good working condition in both the Auditorium and Front of House prior to and following each performance whether produced by the Orpheum Theatre or a renting organization.

b. Repair equipment as necessary, or hire and oversee repair work by outside professionals when specific skills are required, as when work requires special licensing

c. Monitor physical integrity of Orpheum Theatre itself and its systems and promptly report any faults or potential problems to Executive Director.

d. Assist Executive Director in planning large-scale renovation or repair work.

e. Maintain all lighting fixtures throughout the theatre in good working order.

f. Ensure the Orpheum Theatre, its auditorium, lobbies, box office, and concession stand are ready for occupancy before every event.

g. Oversee custodial function of the facility as necessary. Schedule and oversee contractors as needed.

h. Ensure Theatre marquee is in working order and changed to fit the event in a timely manner.

i. Add or remove production posters from theatre display cases and lobby board as needed.

j. Perform additional tasks as required or requested by Executive Director

C. Development & Public Relations

a. Work with the Executive Director to support the mission, purpose, and priorities of the facility

b. Develop and maintain working list of future building improvements and capital projects

c. Work with Executive Director to coordinate facility preservation fundraising campaign(s) as needed

d. Research potential sources of, and applies for, grants and public funding related to building preservation and operations

e. Conduct both public and private tours and foster interest in and passion for the Orpheum in the community.

EDUCATION:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required, college degree in theatre production preferred.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Prior technical experience in stage or musical theatre required. See “Preferred Skills” below.
  • Prior experience in building maintenance and/or systems management

PREFERRED SKILLS:

  • Working knowledge of mechanical systems such as electrical systems, HVAC systems, plumbing systems, and fire alarm/sprinkler systems.
  • Knowledge of contemporary sound and lighting equipment, techniques and trends is highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of theatrical rigging systems.
  • Knowledge in set up of staging, i.e. platforms, orchestra shells, extensions, etc.
  • Ability to read and reproduce lighting plots as presented by artist or renting organizations.
  • Knowledge of basic theatre terms and stage directions.
  • Ability to provide basic sound services.
  • Excellent time management skills and ability to prioritize tasks.
  • Self-motivated and able to work in an unsupervised environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills

PHYSICAL SKILLS:

  • Ability to lift a minimum of 60 lbs.
  • Ability to climb stairs and ladders.
  • Ability to bend, kneel, crouch, sit, stand for long periods of time.
  • Not afraid of heights or darkness.
