Position Summary

The technical director will ensure that the physical and technical facilities of the Marjorie Luke Theatre meets safety requirements, are properly maintained and updated as needed, cleaned, and readily available for use by community renters and Santa Barbara Unified
School District employees and students. In addition, the individual will manage all rehearsal and production work within the theatre. They will interface with renters and district users to ensure smooth and successful events. This person will provide technical direction to SBJHS productions and events as well as to community renters and producers. This exempt position is an at-will employee and serves at the pleasure and discretion of the Board of Directors.

Principal Responsibilities and Duties (include but not limited to):

ADMINISTRATION

  • Work in coordination with the Managing Director and Board of Directors
  • Deliver reports to CYPAC Board of Directors as needed
  • Check and respond to all phone calls and emails in a timely manner
  • Offer tours of the facility both on a scheduled, and a drop-by basis, if needed
  • Research, collect bids and purchase any new theatrical equipment in conjunction with the Managing Director
  • Research replacement parts (repair when possible), including contracts and warranties
  • Maintain files and instruction manuals for equipment within the facility
  • Create documentation on technical equipment for renters and website

THEATRE WORK

  • Be responsible for opening and closing of the facility
  • Maintain facility’s physical plant and theatrical systems, tools, and equipment; then supervise their safe use.
  • Schedule appropriate routine maintenance of technical equipment
  • Maintain an annual cleaning schedule of equipment and facility including but not limited to lighting, curtains, floors, shop, basement and tech booth to ensure longevity and safety of equipment
  • Coordinate all school equipment repairs through district work orders
  • Maintain inventories of supplies and parts related to such equipment
  • Manage storage of all new, and existing equipment and supplies
  • Repair tools, facilities, and all other equipment used within the facility by the staff, renters, or the school
  • Repaint the stage floor on a regular basis. Touch up all painted surfaces as needed
  • Maintain a selection of cleaning and maintenance supplies
  • Maintain kiosk interior walls and lighting
  • Inspect all rigging on a monthly basis, all air filters on a bimonthly basis.

SHOW PREPARATION

  • Maintain a theatrical repertory light plot including all house lighting and control.
  • Maintain a “live-show” audio system including a console, PA, and stage monitors.
  • Maintain an A/V projection system including a screen and media switcher.
  • Maintain auditorium seating including gum removal, repairs, and stain removal.

SCHOOL EVENTS:

  • Support school events: Includes meeting with teachers, evaluating event needs, attending rehearsals, writing cues, operating lighting, sound and projection equipment
  • Act as a technical and creative consultant for all SBJH plays, assemblies, and concerts
  • Work with teachers and students to ensure a safe class environment where students can learn proper theatrical technique and protocol for stagecraft and performance
  • Interface with SBJHS staff and faculty for school events including open houses, band rehearsals, and school deliveries that are received through the scene shop door. Ensure that all scheduled rehearsals are set up and have appropriate lighting.
  • Train students to use and run theatrical technical equipment for their own shows
  • Supervise, or assign a qualified supervisor to oversee, any and all use of the theatre by students, staff, faculty, or the general public
  • Support district-wide events in coordination with the Managing Director to insure proper sound, lighting and seating for participants
  • Work must be balanced between the Luke’s needs and the needs of the school/district keeping in mind that the Luke must have rental income to pay for the day to day operation of the theatre

OUTSIDE RENTALS

  • Meet with renters as needed to plan for technical needs for events, ensuring successful productions
  • Attend meetings with the renters and Luke staff to help ensure successful events
  • Anticipate possible technical and logistical needs, and advise renters
  • Act as the technical contact and often as a creative consultant for all facility users
  • Be responsible for opening the facility and securing the facility at the agreed call times for all rehearsals and performances.
  • Be responsible for the enforcement of all applicable fire and safety codes, and also the Santa Barbara Unified School District policies
  • Maintain a list of personnel to hire for stage crew including the Technical Director position
  • Hire a crew to work all of the needs of the rental including load-in, set-up, rehearsals, performances and strike
  • Coordinate and supervise all of the stage crew for stage work, shop work, rehearsals, and show duties
  • Offer on-site training to technicians who need training on theatrical equipment
  • Be on-call for staff and crew working in the Technical Director’s absence
  • Exercise disciplinary action overall stage crew, including suspension and termination

PROFESSIONALISM:

  • Attend meetings of the Board whenever possible and when unable to attend, confer with the Managing Director about pertinent discussions and topics
  • Provided polite, supportive interactions with renters/artists or other individuals involved with the theatre and its productions, maintaining a high level of customer and participant satisfaction

Education, Experience, Knowledge, and Skills:

  • Minimum of eight years experience serving as a technical director for a community or regional theatre rental venue serving students and public arts organizations.
  • Familiarity with technical infrastructure of the Marjorie Luke Theatre.

Physical Demands:
Ability to lift 50 pounds, good health and stamina.

Salary: $58,000-$60,000 plus additional income from production work with renters.
