Job Description
• Position: Teaching Artist
• Status: Contract, Part Time
• Reports to: Education & Community Engagement Director and Program Manager
• Location: Performing Arts Houston, Houston TX
• Salary: $70/hour
• Open until filled
The Teaching Artist is a detail-oriented, self-motivated team player who, as a contract employee, assists the Education and Community Engagement Team with the implementation of fine arts curriculum that supports ECE programs and initiatives. The ideal Teaching Artist has a creative, collaborative spirit and a strong desire to embrace opportunity and build sustainable program structures. The Teaching Artist must be comfortable leading groups of K-12 and adult learners in exercises celebrating dance or visual arts as well as structuring a curriculum in an engaging, creative, and fun way.
Teaching Artists may assist with both Teacher Workshops and The Collaborative Arts Project (CAP):
- Teacher Workshops: Teaching Artists are responsible for designing curriculum that introduces Art Contest themes to visual art classroom teachers. These workshops also present an artmaking technique related to the contest theme and include guided discussions and activities that encourage teachers to reflect on how to adapt workshop content for their own classrooms.
- Collaborative Arts Project (CAP): CAP is a customizable in-school residency shaped in partnership with classroom teachers, using creative writing and the arts to expand beyond traditional middle school Fine Arts instruction. Over the course of 10 classroom sessions, students engage in learning experiences supported by visiting artists and a theater field trip, deepening their artistic expertise and creative expression.
Specific Responsibilities:
- Teach CAP lessons in an engaging and age-appropriate way
- Assist with lesson development based on feedback from students and the classroom teacher
- Support student field trip to the theater and engagement with visiting artist
- Communicate with classroom teacher and Performing Arts Houston administrator regarding content and logistics
- Design and facilitate Teacher workshops related to mainstage presentations and the Annual Student Art Contest
Essential Skills/Qualifications:
- A valid driver’s license and regular access to reliable transportation required
- Experience teaching K-12 students preferred
- Strong and confident classroom management skills preferred
- Love for the arts and working with young people required
- Ability to lift and/or move approx. 30 pounds required
- Knowledge of and experience with Houston’s arts communities a plus
- Fluency in Spanish a plus
