Scenic Charge Artist
Job Description
• Job Title: Scenic Charge Artist
• Reporting Relationship: Reports to Technical Director
• Supervises: Paint Crew (if any)
• Job Time & Classification: Regular Full-Time Exempt
• Typical Work Schedule: 8 am to 5 pm; Monday-Friday; Some nights and weekends depending on tech rehearsals.
• Compensation: $42,000 – $45,000/yr +benefits (health, vision, dental, retirement, PTO, life insurance)
General Functions
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Supervise the application of all painted and textural finishes on all scenic units and drops.
- Demonstrate skill in the use of paint sprayers (pneumatic, airless, hand pump) and their maintenance.
- Demonstrate proficiency in various painting methods and materials needed to paint drops, stencil making, and faux finishes
During the PlanningPeriod:
- Study the designs (rendering or model) and the paint elevations in conference with the Designer.
- Determine the methods of painting to be used in consultation with the Designer.
- Create sample boards with the painting techniques discussed; check the results with the Designer before beginning painting.
- Estimate and order needed paint materials and equipment.
- Prepare a schedule and sequence of tasks, in consultation with the Designer and Technical Director to determine the distribution of space and time needed.
During the Work Period:
- Create all required artistic paintings.
- Supervise the work of the paint crew. Before beginning the project, outline the work schedule and scenic requirements with the crew; train them in the painting technique(s) to be used.
- Supervise and coordinate the use of any offsite painting locations.
- Prepare and label all paint supplies consistently as needed on a daily basis.
- Clean all equipment and the paint shop thoroughly following each work session. Return materials to the assigned place; save all paint that can be used again; cover all paint and glue containers.
- Coordinate the paint schedule with the scenery construction schedule in consultation with the TD and Production Manager.
