Job Description

Theatre Cedar Rapids (TCR) is seeking a Scene Shop Foreman to lead the construction and fabrication of scenery and function as the chief carpenter, reporting to the Technical Director. The Foreman will supervise shop technicians and overhire and collaborate with the Technical Director, Artistic Director, Scenic and Lighting Director, Production Manager, and other production and creative teams to develop and implement scenic designs for large-scale musicals and plays.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the construction and installation of scenery for all productions.
  • Ensure efficient, safe, and clean working conditions in the scene shop, performance venues, and other work areas.
  • Assign daily tasks to shop personnel and work with the Technical Director to meet shop schedules.
  • Collaborate with the Technical Director to manage the scenic build and shop budget.
  • Oversee all stage rigging installation, ensuring adherence to industry safety guidelines.
  • Train and work with volunteers on set construction, operation, and care of scenery.
  • Be available for emergency troubleshooting and repairs of scenery and stage equipment during established “on call” windows, and manage staffing for other “on call” periods when unavailable.
  • Directly supervise technicians during load-ins.
  • Lead post-production strike and manage the storage or disposal of scenic elements.
  • Conduct timely inventory of shop supplies.
  • Inventory shop hand and power tools, reporting any missing or damaged tools.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A B.A. in theatre with a focus in technical theatre, or equivalent experience.
  • Excellent proficiency in carpentry and related tools and techniques.
  • Excellent proficiency in metal fabrication and associated tools and techniques, particularly MIG welding.
  • Strong organizational and supervisory abilities.
  • Flexibility to adapt to varied work schedules.
  • Commitment to fostering a positive, supportive work environment and culture.
  • Ability to read and interpret drafting.
  • Alignment with production values, including continuous improvement and innovation to enhance the artistic impact on audiences.

 

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Two years of experience as a shop foreman in a theatrical venue or scenic studio.
  • Knowledge of hydraulic and pneumatic equipment.
  • CAD experience.
  • Drafting experience.
  • Knowledge of theatrical lighting tools and techniques.

 

Compensation:

  • Annual salary ranging from $46,000 to $51,000, reviewed and set annually based on performance. Performance-based raises will be considered based on success in fulfilling job responsibilities.
