Part-Time Gallery Assistants – Museum
Be a part of the customer-service team responsible for creating warm, welcoming and positive in-gallery experiences for all our visitors.
Gallery Assistants are stationed throughout the Museum galleries and are responsible for initiating conversations with visitors to promote understanding of the Museum’s visitor policies, exhibitions and onsite amenities – all in a friendly, knowledgeable and professional manner.

Actively initiate conversations with visitors, answer visitor questions and respond to visitor needs
Act as an ambassador for the Museum and the neighborhood by sharing information about education programs, dining options, our Shop, membership, and the overall exhibition program with visitors. You don’t need to be an art expert, but you do need to be a “Whitney Museum” expert
Maintain the integrity of the Whitney’s galleries by ensuring that visitors understand appropriate onsite conduct and the Museum’s visitor policies. Escalate policy breaches to Security, when necessary
Keep an open line of communication with colleagues across the Visitor Experience Department, including Security, Facilities, Volunteers, Visitor Services, Member Services and Retail
Other duties as required
Friendly, outgoing, and professional attitude
Genuine interest in customer service and public-facing roles
A minimum of 1-2 years customer service experience
Excellent communication and empathetic listening skills
Ability to stand for extended periods of time
Must be available to work at least two of the three following days regularly: Friday, Saturday, Sunday
Interest in arts and culture a plus
Bi-lingual a plus
Part-time schedule, up to 25 hours per week. Must be able to work holidays, early and evening hours, and at least two of the three following days regularly: Friday, Saturday, Sunday
A mandatory orientation will take place on February 4 and 5 and schedules go into effect starting February 6.
About the Visitor Experience Department at the Whitney
The Whitney’s Visitor Experience Department is comprised of the Museum’s public facing teams: Visitor Services, Gallery Assistants, Retail, Security, Theater, and Facilities. Members of the Visitor Experience Department together strive to create a positive and welcoming environment for visitors by acting as ambassadors for the Whitney and surrounding area, and taking a genuine interest in visitors’ needs.
