Full-Time Event Producer, Hess Theater
The Whitney Museum seeks a full time Event Producer to provide technical and administrative support for all activities executed in The Susan and John Hess Family Theater – a state-of-the-art 200 seat multipurpose dedicated theatrical space for performance, film & video screenings, education programming, corporate rentals, and special events.
Reporting to the Theater Manager, this position plays a primary role in the technical execution of all Hess Theater based activity.
- Advance, oversee and implement over 400+ theater-based events as assigned by the Theater Manager
- Assist in setting and enforcing safe-use guidelines for equipment and theater
- Collaborate and work closely with members of internal departments—Audio Visual (Local 306), Facilities, Visitor Services, Security, Curatorial, Education Special Events, Exhibitions & Collections—to advise on and realize the delivery of any theater-based activity
- Act as an interface between external designers/technical staff and internal departments (AV/Facilities) for performative works and special events to accommodate technical needs
- Manage the operation and upkeep of the theatrical technical systems and facilitate the use of service contracts for theater equipment as needed; provide purchasing suggestions and long-range technical planning for upgrades and improvement to keep the venue in a state-of-the-art condition.
- Assist in the overseeing and directing of technical staff during load-ins, rehearsals, and strikes in the Hess Theater as needed in conjunction with other internal departments
- Assist in hiring and supervising freelance project-based support staff as well as a pool of on-call temporary technical staff (overhires)
- Day to day administrative duties including drafting ground plans, creating renderings, compiling paperwork, and managing inventories
- Bachelor’s degree in technical theater or equivalent work experience supervising and executing technical aspects of live events
- 3+ years of experience in producing technical theater-based events
- Ability to work well in a fast-paced, high-energy environment and problem solve/accommodate last-minute requests that frequently shift in direction
- Available to work flexible, non-traditional hours including nights, weekends and holidays.
- Ability to stand; walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, or work at height for extended periods; comfortable using ladders, vertical and scissor lifts
- Must be able to lift and move up to 20 pounds frequently; occasionally lift and move up to 50 pounds
- Strong background in live sound, ETC LED lighting systems, digital and film projections, theatrical rigging, basic systems & network management.
- Advanced knowledge of standard theatrical software (Vectorworks, Lightwright, ETC Eos Family, QLab)
- Experience supervising union technical staff and translating lay-speak into useful technical terminology for stakeholders and crew
