POSITION SUMMARY:
The Draper/Tailor position’s primary responsibility is to create patterns based on Costume Designer sketches/research, oversee a team of first hands and stitchers in the creation of the garments, and fit assigned costumes for the Alliance Theatre’s 10 annual productions, including LORT B and D stages, and Theatre for Young Audiences shows. The Draper/Tailor also works closely with other members of the costume shop team: Draper, Design Assistants, Craft Master, Wig Master, as well as Actors.

WORK SCHEDULE:
• Typically Monday to Friday, 8am to 4:30pm; evening and occasional weekend calls are likely.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:
• Generate garment patterns based on Costume Designer’s sketches/research to fit cast actors.
• Work with the Costume Designer to properly fit, alter and/or modify built, pulled, rented or purchased garments.
• Make yardage estimates for fabrics and trims and consult with designers on appropriate fabric choices.
• Guide the construction process through the shop including cutting and construction.
• Assign work to the first hands and stitchers.
• Supervise stitchers and oversee stitching work for quality and completion.
• Advise Costume Director of progress and problems in building or finishing the costumes as designed in the time allotted.
• Assist with maintenance during performance runs.
• Supervise the completion of notes resulting from tech/dress rehearsals.
• Maintain order in the shop and stock areas.
• Assist with pulling and restocking costumes from stock as needed.
• Participate in achieving the artistic goals of the Alliance Theatre.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience:
• Previous related experience in a theatrical costume shop.
• Experience as a draper or tailor in an entertainment field.

Skills and Abilities:
• Must be able to create patterns and fit garments, tailoring skills are preferred
• Must have an understanding of period garment styles and construction, and how to adapt that knowledge to theatrical costuming
• Must have a working knowledge of fabrics, their uses, and construction methods
• Must be skilled with using costume and sewing equipment: including industrial sewing machines, steam generator iron system, scissors, and other standard sewing-related equipment
• Must have strong time management, interpersonal, and communication skills
• Must have strong supervisory skills with the ability to instruct others patiently
• Must be organized and attentive to details
• Must be able to stay calm under pressure
