The Director is the IPA’s Chief Executive Officer, reporting to the Board of Trustees. The Director is the principal fundraiser for the organization, with duties to include stewardship of current donors and cultivation, onboarding of new individual, governmental and institutional funders, and management of an annual benefit.
The Director provides innovative and forward-thinking leadership internally and externally to successfully realize the IPA’s mission and vision. The Director, working with the Board, will develop annual and longer-term strategic plans and budgets, with responsibility for financial management, including monthly financial reporting and serving as a liaison between the IPA and its consultants, attorneys, and accountants.
Competitive candidates will be those with:
- A deep and passionate commitment to the IPA’s mission
- The ability to analyze problems, identify solutions and project consequences
- Strong listening and interpersonal skills, and demonstrated ability to develop and maintain effective relationships
- The ability to maintain a high level of integrity and consistent ethical judgment in all working relationships
- Outstanding planning, organizational, and analytical skills
- Sound judgment in problem-solving and decision-making techniques
- The ability to balance competing priorities, complex situations, and tight deadlines
This position is currently part-time (20 hours a week) and hybrid – with remote and in-office hours on Governors Island, as required. There will be an opportunity for the Director to assume a full-time role as the IPA grows.

ABOUT THE IPA
Mission: The Institute for Public Architecture (IPA) believes in a future in which design is used as a tool for facilitating social justice and the public has a voice in all decisions that shape our built environment. The IPA uses design to challenge social and physical inequities in our cities, addressing urgent policy issues by mobilizing a network of design activists, professionals, government officials and community stakeholders. The IPA’s principal activity is a focused place-based design residency and related public programming that engages specialists in the field and members of the public, alike. The IPA presents the outcome of these residencies through exhibitions, public programs and publications.
Since 2014, IPA has hosted a series of summer residency programs that hold a unique place among the many residency opportunities offered annually in New York City. It has been organized as a “mobile,” place-based program that offers participants a stipend, individual and shared workspace, a publication and public programming. In 2022, the IPA expanded its residency programs to include year-round opportunities for independent scholars, designers, architects and artists to pursue their research in 8-12 week residencies at the Block House on Governors Island in New York Harbor. Applicants to this competitive program are chosen via an open, international call for applications and a selection committee composed of experts in the fields of contemporary architecture and design.
