Job Description

The Development Manager will be responsible for planning and executing the organization’s fundraising strategy across all sources of giving, providing leadership for the company’s fundraising efforts, including individual donations, business and corporate sponsorships, grant writing and fundraising events.
As a new position, the Development Manager will develop the company’s development programs and capacity.



The Development Manager will be responsible for:


Individual Donations

  • Develop and maintain donor prospect database and donor records
  • Develop and oversee generating donor income reports and other reports from database system and updating records
  • Develop and execute all fundraising campaigns
  • Update donor lists for inclusion in playbills and on website as requested by Marketing Manager
  • Cultivate Individual Donor Program and develop long term relationships with major donors


Business and Corporate Sponsorships

  • Identify and solicit potential production and season sponsors
  • Oversee corporate sponsor recruitment and management
  • Solicit corporate sponsorship, benefit fulfillment, and support
  • Identify, solicit and secure matching gifts



Grant Writing

  • Identify potential granting entities, write and submit grants for public and private funding
  • Research, write, and report on grants and Letter of Intents (LOIs) to current and potential funding sources


Fundraising Events

  • Coordinate planning and hosting of special events for donors


Other Responsibilities

  • As company member, share public speaking appearances, curtain speeches, media interviews as available
  • Serve on board committees as related to development
  • Maintain the development calendar for grant and reporting deadlines
  • Prepare proposals and budgets for board approval of any fundraising activities
  • Represent the organization at community and business events to cultivate and develop relationships with donors and grantors as available
  • Promptly acknowledge all gifts and donations made to the Theatre
  • Ensure donations are used as solicited
  • Support Management team and Board of Directors including attending or preparing reports for all Board meetings
  • Develop with Artistic Director and Managing Director realistic and measurable monthly, quarterly and first-year objectives and goals
  • Develop with Artistic Director and Managing Director three year and five year Development plans
  • Other responsibilities related to fiscal development of the company as assigned by Artistic Director or Managing Director



Preferred candidates will have:


  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field, graduate degree preferred. Experience in non-profit arts development can be substituted for education
  • A true love of working with donors
  • Ability to work collegially in an intimate administrative, performing arts environment;
  • Create a harmonious and nurturing environment
  • Strong sense of initiative and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to work well independently and to manage, train, and motivate others
  • Excellent verbal and written communication including documentation, record keeping and telephone skills
  • Strong organizational and analytical skills
  • Exceptional task management skills including the ability to successfully handle multiple priorities in sometimes high-stress situations
  • Excellent problem solving and strategic thinking skills
  • Demonstrated ability to pay attention to detail and accuracy
  • Proven ability to work independently and take initiative to implement tasks in fast-paced environment
  • Complete discretion with confidential materials both with internal staff and the external community;
  • Proven experience in planning and executive special events
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including intermediate to advanced skills in Microsoft Excel.
  • Competency in the use, report writing, querying and maintenance of database programs.
  • Energy, availability, and willingness to work evenings, odd hours, and weekends on the occasion of special events


Additional skills and experience that are preferred, but not required, include experience with Patron Manager or another Customer Relationship Management (CRM) platform

  • A valid California Drivers License (and auto insurance)
  • Be able to lift up to 50 lbs.

This full-time, non-exempt position includes an annual salary in the range of $60 to $80K commensurate with experience.
Capital Stage offers paid holidays, 2 weeks vacation/per year, paid sick leave, partial tuition reimbursement for continuing education, and free tickets to shows.
