Hoyt Sherman Place is a premier historic cultural center in Iowa, working with national and local partners to present outstanding performances, celebrate Iowa’s history and grow arts and culture in the region. Our venue offers an intimate theater experience with extraordinary acoustics, a beautiful historic mansion, and a majestic art gallery.

About the Role: The Development Director is responsible for providing leadership, strategic direction, and management of all Hoyt Sherman Place Foundation fundraising efforts. In this role, you will identify, engage, cultivate, solicit, and steward current and prospective donors in expanding their financial support of Hoyt Sherman Place. With a $5M+ budget, Hoyt Sherman Place relies on a balanced revenue of 80% earned and 20% contributed.


  • Plan, administer, and implement plans for contributed income including special events, donor campaigns, major gifts, planned giving programs, corporate initiatives, Capital Campaigns, and grants.
  • Seek contributed funds for special events and event sponsorships.
  • Oversee and/or schedule staff or volunteer to serve as hosts for the Meredith Donor Lounge during theater events.
  • Provide a creative leadership role in the identification, cultivation, and solicitation of individual, corporate and foundation contributions.
  • Research and write grants from governmental agencies, foundations, and other organizations.
  • Establish and maintain a planned giving program and seek endowment opportunities to assist donors with their legacy at Hoyt Sherman Place.
  • Provide direction to the HSPF Development Committee, including preparing materials and attending all meetings.
  • Pursue in-kind donations and services.
  • Maintain development database programs (DonorPerfect)
  • Perform other duties, functions and special projects as assigned by the Chief Executive Officer.



Nonprofit development experience; excellent oral and written communication skills; creativity, self-motivation, and the ability to build rapport quickly and effectively with individuals.
