Organizational Unit Overview

East Carolina University is a public doctoral/research university in Greenville, North Carolina, with an enrollment of nearly 29,000 students. It is the third largest university in North Carolina. The School of Theatre and Dance, in the College of Fine Arts and Communication, has an enrollment of over 250 Acting, Dance Performance and Choreography, Educational Theatre, Entertainment Design and Production, Musical Theatre, Stage Management, Theatre Arts, and Theatre for Young Audiences Majors and Minors with over 30 Faculty and Staff. The School is fully accredited by the National Association of Schools of Theatre.

 

Job Duties

This position will provide leadership, production support, and instructional support for all the SoTD Dance and Theatre Productions and to the SoTD faculty and students by:

 

Supporting the Theatre and Dance curriculum by teaching one of the following as needed:

 

  • THEA 2001: Theatre Technology,
  • THEA 2011: Theatre Technology Lab,
  • THEA 3603: Selected Topics in Costume Technology, or
  • THEA 2006: The Art of Make-Up (one course per semester as needed)
  • Draping, pattern-making, and cutting costumes from Designer renderings or sketches.
  • Assigning and supervising students in costume construction; reviewing their work for performance-ready quality costumes for all Dance and Theatre Productions.
  • Building and altering costumes for all SoTD Productions; constructing and altering costumes for all Dance and Theatrical Mainstage Productions; occasionally designing pieces requested.

Supervising and assisting students with fittings.

  • Coaching and assisting students in costume, make-up, and hair technology.
  • Assisting with and supporting the safety protocols in the costume shop, classrooms, and throughout all productions.
  • Supervising and assisting student crews with laundering, dry cleaning, costume prep, costume maintenance, and restocking for all productions.
  • Supervising and assisting students in the daily cleaning and organizing of the costume shop spaces.
  • Organizing the physical inventory, ordering supplies when necessary.
  • Updating the Digital Costume Library after completion of each production.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director.

 

Minimum Education/Experience

 

  • M.F.A. in Theatre Arts

License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation: N/A

 

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education

M.F.A. in Theatre Arts – Design and Production, focusing on Costume Design, Costume Construction, and Stage Make-Up and relevant experience as a Costume Shop Foreman.
