Associate Director / Director

Job Description
Bruce Silverstein Gallery, located in the heart of the Chelsea art district, is seeking an experienced Associate Director/Director to join our team. Internationally recognized as a leader in the fine art photography field, the gallery has recently expanded its program to include artists working in all media and has opened a new state-of-the-art exhibition space. This talented and motivated experienced individual will play a pivotal role in the gallery’s success moving forward, focusing on all aspects of the operation, including sales, artist relations, staff management, marketing, and PR.
Gallery Director/Associate Director Responsibilities:
Sales and Client Relations
- Cultivate and help maintain relationships with existing and new collectors, curators, advisors, and institutions to drive sales and build the gallery’s client base.
- Assist gallery owner with VIP previews, private views, and targeted outreach to prospective buyers for upcoming exhibitions and art fairs.
- Work with gallery owner on secondary market sales.
Gallery Strategy
- Implement the gallery’s programming for exhibitions, art fairs, and marketing in alignment with the gallery’s mission.
- Assist in identifying emerging artists, curators, and market trends to expand the gallery’s program and strengthen its market presence.
Exhibition Planning
- Oversee the planning and assist in the curation and execution of exhibitions, including artwork selection, and exhibition layout.
- In conjunction with the gallery Registrar, assist in securing works from artists, estates, galleries, and private collections.
- Organize the marketing for the exhibition by preparing press materials/press packets.
Marketing and communication
- Develop and execute marketing strategies alongside the gallery staff to promote exhibitions, new works by artists, and the gallery’s program through social media, press outreach, and gallery newsletters.
- Represent the gallery at art fairs and networking events to increase visibility and expand networks.
- Produce press releases, exhibition catalogs, and other promotional materials in collaboration with the gallery owner and the rest of the team.
- Track gallery analytics, including Google Analytics, Artsy Analytics, and website/social media analytics, to identify areas for improvement and market opportunities.
- Work alongside the team to promote the gallery’s work through platforms like Artsy and Artnet.
Required Skills & Attributes:
- Strong interpersonal skills; able to communicate effectively with colleagues, clients, and vendors
- Excellent written communication skills (writing sample required)
- Highly motivated self-starter with strong initiative
- Collaborative team player who works well with others
- Genuine passion for art, particularly photography
- Proven ability to multitask and manage competing priorities
- Proficient in Adobe Photoshop and Artsystems
- Adaptable and enthusiastic about learning and taking on new tasks
Salary
Salary commensurate with experience:
- Associate Director: $60000 – $75000 salary
- Director: $80,000 to $100,000 salary
- Annual bonus based upon individual productivity and group success
