Job Description Summary:
This is a 9-month, non-tenure track position. Perform all aspects of the position of Technical Director for all Del Mar College Drama productions and events. Supervise student crews and paid student assistants to execute designs. Manage operations and maintain equipment in the Drama Program’s two theatre spaces, Scene Shop, and associated production facilities. Establish and maintain proper safety protocols in theatre spaces and production facilities. Maintain appropriate professional relationships with students, colleagues and the community. Assist the Drama Program in developing improvements in the program and assure compliance with National Association of Schools of Theatre (NAST ) standards.
Participate in the self-evaluation process. Establish goals and objectives which may include personal and professional development plans in consultation with the Department Chair. Accept special assignments occasionally. Participate in department, divisional, and College meetings. Participate in activities required to maintain program and College accreditation standards. Participate in the College planning process by assisting in the formulation of goals and objectives and budget priorities. Meet professional assignments in accordance with the College calendar. Participate in business and/or community activities that promote the mission of the College.
Required Job Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
- Strong problem-solving, critical thinking, and time management skills.
- Execute designs utilizing principally student crews.
- Ability to budget for and build set design elements in cooperation with other Drama Faculty and students.
- Ability to utilize effective communication styles and methods to accomplish the work of the Technical Director, including the safety component.
- Experience working with student crews is required.
- Strong drafting skills, including the ability to read, interpret, and create technical and construction drawings.
- Successful experience utilizing instructional technologies, power tools, welding and metalwork, computers, Vectorworks, internet resources, stage mechanics and equipment, rigging, scenery automation, special effects equipment, and other appropriate media in technical theatre instruction.
- Ability to comfortably work on ladders and at heights over 50 feet above the stage floor, understand power distribution required of moving lights and scenery automation, and engineering principles required to construct complex scenic units which adhere to a high level of safety standards.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Theatre with at least three (3) years professional experience in technical theatre
-OR-
Master’s degree with at least 18 graduate hours in theatre with an emphasis in technical theatre
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master of Fine Arts degree.
- College-level teaching experience.
- Experience with special effects equipment and operation (atmospherics and/or pyrotechnics).

Job Duties:
PRODUCTION RESPONSIBILITIES :
- Maintain daily hours in the Drama Scene Shop and theatre spaces.
- Maintain and promote a high level of safety, craftsmanship, and timeliness in execution of designs.
- Supervise students in construction, metal work and welding, assembly, and special effects for all Drama productions and sponsored events.
- Assist with show budgeting, planning and materials orders and acquisitions, maintaining accurate budget records, researching products and specialty materials and generation of working drawings (may require use of personal vehicle to shop for supplies).
- Supervise student training on theatre equipment, hand and power tools, and all aspects of safety procedures.
- Maintain drama production equipment, two theatre production spaces, and support areas including lighting and sound shops, paint shop, carpentry and metal shops, prop shop and off site storage, theatrical rigging system and hardware, automation equipment, special effects equipment, and scenery storage.
- Provide technical support for Drama outreach and recruiting efforts.
Job Duty
BASIC RESPONSIBILITIES :
- Perform regularly scheduled maintenance on Drama equipment and theatre systems, according to Drama Maintenance Schedule.
- Perform annual Drama equipment inventory with student assistance.
- Supervise and approve hours bi-weekly for paid Student Assistant staff.
- Attend technical rehearsals for all productions and events, to assist with technical issues and supervise student production crews.
- Attend scheduled faculty and production meetings.
- Attend selected performances in rotation with other faculty, to resolve technical issues.
- Attend staff/faculty professional development and other activities required by the college.
