Job Description

The David H. Koch Theater (DHKT) at Lincoln Center opened in April 1964 as the New York State Theater. The theater was designed by the renowned architect Philip Johnson, built with funds from the State of New York, and given to the City of New York as a home for performing arts organizations. Today, the theater is home to the New York City Ballet (NYCB) as well as a growing number of national and international touring performing arts groups.

 

General Summary:

The Assistant Stage Manager provides practical and organizational support to the Stage Manager, Production Stage Manager, and Director of Production. Working within the Production Department, this position will be an active component of New York City Ballet performances and technical rehearsals. The Assistant Stage Manager will assist the Production Stage Manager and Stage Manager in all areas described below.

 

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Share calling responsibilities with Production Stage Manager and Stage Manager and supervise deck stage right or stage left when not calling.
  • Create and maintain cue sheets for Stage Management use during performances and rehearsals of ballets assigned, including new works.
  • Create and maintain production paperwork such as deck run sheets, fly cue sheets, bow cards, carpenter paperwork, etc. Take, update, and/or archive notes for technical aspects of ballets assigned, including new works.
  • Assist lighting department during intermission changeovers; keep time; check in Dancers, Conductors and Guest Artists. Keep Dancers informed of any last-minute program or casting changes and any emergency rehearsals.
  • Take notes of technical issues during rehearsals and performances.
  • Facilitate communication between stage management, the Dancers, and crew.
  • Assist in supervising the work of the stage crew during rehearsals and performances.
  • Ensure safety for all backstage personnel.
  • Track Dancers’ theater cases on tour and in the David H. Koch Theater. Check cases in and out of each location and at the beginning and end of each season.
  • Assist Production Department with packing and coordinating for tours.
  • Distribute weekly schedules and timing sheets in collaboration with the Production Stage Manager and Stage Manager

 

Additional duties might include:

  • Maintenance of the company Daily Log.
  • Maintenance of the Company Dressing Room Database
  • Maintenance of the Crew Numbers Database and Seasonal Crew Number Spreadsheets
  • Maintenance of the Ballet Running Time Database

 

This seasonal position is approximately 36 – 40 weeks per year (depending on touring).
The anticipated start date for this position is September 2, 2025.

 

Minimum Requirements:

  • Strong show calling skills and musicality
  • Ability to read music
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills
  • A sharp eye for detail
  • Computer skills and awareness of current technologies and software
  • Problem solving skills and the ability to think on your feet
  • Must be able to travel when the company is on tour
  • Maintain irregular and extended working hours
  • Bachelor’s degree in performing arts or drama/theater
  • Three (3) years of relevant experience

 

Work Environment and Physical Demands:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the minimum requirements of this position. While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently exposed to:

  • Standing for extended periods of time
  • Theatre and Office settings

 

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:

This is a seasonal contract position; total weeks vary depending on touring. Work hours vary according to the ballet schedule and include weekends, holidays, and other scheduled work periods as necessary.

 

Benefits/Compensation:

This position is an AGMA union supported position, with compensation and all benefits (including health insurance) per the union contract.
