GENERAL STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:

You will plan, facilitate and implement Family Programs for a wide range of audiences with colleagues from across the Metropolitan Museum of Art. You will contribute towards multidisciplinary activities and resources which inspire multigenerational audiences to explore the Museum’s collection and their own creativity. As the lead staff managing the 81st Street Studio, you will maintain and enhance this free space where families explore the intersections between art and science. You will contribute to the strategic planning and implementation of Family and Teen programs and demonstrate leadership within the department and cross-departmentally and contribute to the field of museum education.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:

• Advocate for family learning and engagement within the Museum, establishing and sustaining relationships with peers and strategic partners inside and outside the walls of the institution.
• In alignment with the Education Department’s vision and the Museum’s strategic plan, support the Managing Educator, Family and Teen Programs, in the development and implementation of a strategic vision and pedagogy for high quality, high impact programs for intergenerational and youth audiences at The Met including Children’s Classes, family tours, drop-in programs and other programs related to family audiences.
• Manage the 81st Street Studio, including supervising a team of staff, interns, contract workers, and volunteers. Collaborate and communicate with staff across Education and the Museum to ensure smooth daily operations of this active, hands-on space that welcomes over 200,000 visitors annually.
• Identify key audiences for programs and develop and implement effective engagement strategies to maximize visibility and reach to make The Met more accessible to a broader, more diverse audience. Collaborate with Marketing, Design, and Digital Media to actively promote family programs at The Met.
• Oversee Family Programs budgets and statistics, and mine data to identify participation trends and inform resource allocation and workflow. Contribute to reports for donors and other stakeholders.
• Oversee all logistics regarding implementation of programs, including overseeing contractual, travel-related, administrative, and financial requirements.
• Design and conduct program evaluation; analyze and report on results, applying these to strategic program decisions.
• Train, and supervise staff, interns, and volunteers who support Family Programs to ensure high quality visitor experiences. Supervise, collaborate with, and evaluate contract educators.
• Initiate and sustain productive relationships with colleagues in the Education Department and other departments across the Museum to leverage expertise.
• Assist other Education teams as needed. Support and staff large program and festivals, including but not limited to those in the Family and Teen Programs area.
• Other duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS & QUALIFICATIONS:

• Master’s degree in museum education, art history, studio art, or related field.
• Minimum 5 years of experience working in art museums, cultural institutions, or other equivalent experience in family programming.
• Demonstrated supervisory experience, managing staff, volunteers, and/or interns.
• Demonstrated experience overseeing a public-facing space or environment. Could include informal education, exhibition design, hospitality/retail experience, or equivalent.
• Demonstrated knowledge of current pedagogical and instructional theories and practices in children’s and family learning in informal learning environments
• Demonstrated experience in daily operations of informal family and children’s learning spaces, such as classrooms, interactive play spaces, camps etc
• Demonstrated excellence in teaching with original works of art in a gallery setting for a variety of audiences, including family groups.
• Demonstrated excellence in creating programs, events and activities for children and families, grounded in knowledge of current pedagogical and instructional theories and practices
• Proven capacity to communicate effectively and professionally with different constituencies, verbally and in writing. This includes: excellence in customer service, motivated and personable stance towards visitors and colleagues, strong organizational skills, and a demonstrable desire and ability to effectively engage with families and teens in the Museum.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams)
• Some evening and weekend hours are required, including ensuring staff coverage of the 81st Street Studio.

COMPENSATION RATE:

• Pay Range: $90,000.00 – $95,000.00 / Annually

The specific compensation offered to a candidate may be dependent on a variety of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate’s experience, education, special licensing or qualifications, and other factors.

Location Requirements

At time of employment, employees are expected to be located within commuting distance of the Museum. “Commuting distance” means that they are located in one of following states: New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, or Pennsylvania (the “Tri-state and PA” areas), and be able to commute to and from the Museum in a single day.
