The Chicago High School for the Arts (ChiArts ®) develops the next generation of artistically gifted, diverse scholar artists through intensive pre-professional training in the arts, combined with a comprehensive college preparatory curriculum. The school approaches the development of students through a whole-student approach and through a continuous learning environment for all staff to continuously develop their understanding of our scholar-artists. The Theatre Department Head supports the mission of the school by fostering a safe, healthy, and inspiring learning community for students and teachers. The Theatre Department Head supports and supervises department staff and curriculum. This supervisory role includes aspects of teacher evaluations and budgetary responsibilities. The theatre department includes two distinct programs: acting and musical theatre.
Supervise all theatre related staff and ensure that the department meets the goals and mission of the school
Instruct conservatory theatre course(s), serving students with various levels of previous training, learning styles, abilities and needs
Work with Production Manager to produce all theatre department performances and projects, both curricular based and extracurricular
Interview and hire all theatre staff
Oversee training and evaluation of Theatre instructors and staff, conducting formal and informal class observations, providing feedback on teaching practice
Track and report departmental data
Regularly assess student achievement, skill mastery and career development skills
Serve as an advisor to all theatre students
Oversee communication with students, parents and other ChiArts staff to share artistic progress, encourage positive behavior, and resolve behavioral and artistic problems
Assist school administration in recruitment and selection of students
Create an outstanding environment for teaching and learning
Work with academic staff to ensure all student’s overall success at ChiArts
Manage classroom administration and record keeping including: grades, attendance records, and student progress
Manage departmental budget
Work with Finance Department to manage departmental payroll
Collaborate with other ChiArts artistic and academic faculty and the larger arts community
Identify resources, ideas and strategies to ensure student achievement professionally in the world of theatre
Adopt all curricular models and philosophies that are followed in the academic program and work with the principal to integrate these standards in the theatre department
Oversee vertical alignment of the ChiArts Theatre curriculum
Continuously engage theatre arts partners in the school
Build relationships with organizations including theatre companies, conservatories, university and college programs, and directors, casting agents, and master teachers not only in Chicago but also nationally in order to provide opportunities for students and alumni of ChiArts.
Attend and participate in faculty and administrative meetings, parent conferences, open house, performances, community meetings, in-service professional development sessions, and other school functions.
Lead and provide data and information in meetings with faculty, staff, and the community.
Supervise student performances and events
Assist Principal and Executive Director with tasks as assigned
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities/Attributes:
Minimum (5) years previous teaching experience in theatre at a pre-professional or professional level
Minimum (5) years professional experience in theatre (e.g., performer, director, master teacher, producer, artistic director, playwright, designer, theatre school administrator, etc.)
Minimum (3) years supervisory experience
Bachelor’s Degree required, Master’s Degree preferred
Secondary School experience required
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Excellent interpersonal skills
Excellent classroom management skills
Experience in lesson planning utilizing Understanding by Design
Familiarity in Charlotte Danielson’s Framework for Teaching
Comfort working in a high-accountability school culture
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Proven organizational skills
Proven ability to work with a diverse population
Working understanding of educational law
A high regard for student potential and an ability to provide opportunities for students to develop and succeed
Willingness to be bold and creative in pursuit of what is best for students
Able to adapt and improve in changing situations

Theatre Department Assistant
Job Hazards: This position requires a fingerprint and background check conducted by Chicago Public Schools.
Job Tasks: Must be able to lift up to 35 lbs.
Personal Protective Equipment Needed: N/A
Ergonomic Concerns: This position requires daily use of computers including typing.
Travel Requirements: This position does not require travel as part of the job responsibilities however travel may be required to attend professional development/conferences.
Salary and Benefits:
Full time position (12 months)
Salary starting at $65,000
