MORE ABOUT THE PLAY
THE SPEAKEASY is an immersive theatre experience that transports audience members back in time. The physical environment is a recreation of a 1923 San Francisco speakeasy, featuring a bar, a Vaudeville cabaret, a back-room casino, the chorus girls’ dressing room (where a one-way mirror allows audience members to view private moments), and other related spaces. Audience members are free to wander throughout the venue, where they can buy real drinks, watch Vaudevillian entertainers (magicians, ventriloquists, singers, dancers, comedians), and participate in fake gambling (blackjack, roulette, and craps). At the same time, a cast of 35 actors inhabits the space, portraying both the speakeasy’s guests (World War One buddies; swindling moonshiners; suffragettes; flappers; et al) and its staff (bartenders, bouncers, chorus girls, and others), and perform “slice-of-life” story lines. Audience members can follow characters from room to room, or stay in place as scenes unfold before them.
For the current production of THE SPEAKEASY, we have secured a 10-year lease on a deserted single-screen movie theatre a basement located at Broadway and Columbus in San Francisco’s historic North Beach neighborhood. A $2.5 million construction project has converted the venue into a 9,000 square foot immersive theatre environment. The play has been completely rewritten and features new designs and a new cast. The ambition of the project is bold and open-ended: to delight audiences for years and become an iconic San Francisco cultural institution.
