POSITION OVERVIEW

The New Museum of Contemporary Art is seeking a full-time Youth Programs Assistant. Working within the Education and Public Engagement department, this temporary, grant-funded role will provide administrative and scheduling support for the museum’s youth, school, and tours programs. They will be part of the initial years of implementing new teen initiatives: the NewMu Teen Fellowship and the Bowery Art Space drop-in program, as well as the School Partnership program and school tours. The role is funded for 2.5 years.

The NewMu Teen Fellowship is a two-year, intensive after-school program for New York City high school students. Working directly with artists, museum staff, and community members, fellows gain creative and professional development through mentorship, work experience, and leadership opportunities. Their voices and ideas are amplified by projects including an exhibition of their art and a Youth Summit.

The Bowery Art Space is a monthly after-school drop-in program for high school students. Facilitated by the New Museum’s Teaching Artists and guided by the museum’s learner-centered and culturally sustaining pedagogy, teens experiment with materials through hands-on workshops and explore artworks through discussion.

The School Partnership program provides high school teachers and students with resources, workshops, museum tours, and direct interaction with artists to support the New York Department of Education’s Culturally Responsive-Sustaining Education (CR-S) framework. Dedicated Teaching Artists work with teachers to create lesson plans that highlight marginalized voices and support the diverse racial, linguistic, and cultural identities of students within NYC’s public schools.

The tours program brings hundreds of classrooms to the Museum every year and provides students and teachers with dynamic experiences with art.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist with administrative and scheduling duties for the museum’s application-based and drop-in teen programs, the NewMu Teen Fellowship and Bowery Art Space.
  • Assist with administrative and scheduling duties for the museum’s tour program and School Partnerships. This includes professional development for NYC teachers and the development of teacher resources.

  • Provide day-of support for teen and school programs, including weekly sessions, large-scale teen events, off-site field trips and professional development for NYC teachers.
  • Manage and organize supplies and onsite art spaces for teen and school programs.
  • Work closely with other departments across the Museum, including external affairs, visitor services, security, and facilities to coordinate all logistics for programs and events.
  • Meet and sustain relationships with NYC school teachers and administrators.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • BA or BFA in Fine Art, Art History, Art Education, or related field required
  • One to two years of experience in art administration or art programming in a museum setting and some knowledge of art practices and materials.
  • Knowledge of contemporary art and artists.
