Temporary Winter Play Director
The Beaver Country Day School Performing Arts Department seeks to hire an experienced Play Director to direct the Upper School “Winter Play” with 9-12 graders.
Job responsibilities will include running play rehearsals Monday-Friday from 3:40-5:30, attending weekly production meetings, as well as being responsible for the overall experience of the students.
There is a rehearsal Saturday, January 16 and a tech day on the Saturday before the play, January 23 from 10-5.
In the week before the play, candidates should be prepared to be at school from 3:30-6:30 and the week of the play until 9:00pm.
They are expected to attend every performance.
The auditions begin the week of November 16th(we need to figure out which days) and the show dates are January 28, 29 & 30 at 7pm.
There is a two week vacation in December for the holidays.
The director is expected at strike Monday, February 1st and Tuesday, Feb 2nd if possible.
The goal for this production is to create a unique theater experience for the students. It will be in a black box and could be a student written piece, political theater piece, incorporate poetry, dance, music, puppetry, mask work.
If you have experience “creating” theater with high school students, it is possible that candidates will be able to develop a play that caters to their individual strengths.
Recent plays include, The Boal Project, 30 Plays in 60 Minutes, a Comedia focused piece, Cafe le Monde by Chuck Mee, a play called If You Can’t Stand the Heat that featured written and devised scenes that took place in a kitchen, The NanoTheater Project (NeoFuturistic play) and a Radio Play in 2020.
Qualified candidates should have a wealth of experience in theater direction and should possess excellent time management and organizational skills.
The ability to collaborate creatively with adults and the ability to teach and work with high school students are essential aspects of the role.
The director will be provided with technical support including a costumer, technical director, producer and student stage managers.
A Masters Degree is preferred.
The stipend for directing is $5, 800.
