Wardrobe Supervisor/Costume Technician (R0007505)
Job Description Summary:
The Wardrobe Supervisor & Costume Technician oversees all aspects of wardrobe, including care and maintenance of costumes, for Theatre and Dance productions. This position also assists with stitching, cutting, and draping functions for productions and supports the Costume Studio as secondary manager.
Essential Functions:
- Manages wardrobe processes for productions, including:
- Generates clear and detailed paperwork for wardrobe crews, describing duties throughout the production and care for garments in between performances.
- Supervises and trains student wardrobe crews throughout the production and rehearsal process.
- Acts as costume technician (including some cutter/draper functions) for mainstage Theatre & Dance productions by draping and drafting patterns, constructing complicated garments, and performing advanced alterations in the Costume Studio.
- Trains and mentors lab students, federal work study students, and student assistants in conjunction with the Costume Studio Manager.
- Attends and participates in designer/crew runs, production meetings, dress rehearsals, work calls, strikes and other production related events.
- Coordinates with Designers and Costume Studio Manager:
- Assists in executing costume designs for mainstage Theatre & Dance productions.
- Assists in costume fittings.
- Maintains a safe working environment in the work and storage areas.
- Supports the daily operations of the Costume Studio.
Other Functions:
- Maintains costumes being used in production, including repairs, laundry, and dry cleaning.
- Shares responsibility for maintaining a well-stocked and safe working space.
- Shares responsibility for adjustment and maintenance of studio equipment.
- Shares responsibility for organizing storage, maintaining collections, documenting collections, and basic conservation.
- Shares responsibility for generating and maintaining paperwork (piece lists and measurement documents) for the Costume Studio in production.
Required Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
- BA or BFA or an equivalent combination of education or professional experience.
- Basic computer literacy, with working knowledge of Google Drive and Google Suite and/or other Office suite software.
- Creative thinking, decision making, problem solving in a fast-paced environment.
- Project management and supervision skills/experience.
- Working knowledge of costume construction, crafts, wigs, and make up
- Costume maintenance skills, including sewing, laundering for a variety of costume types, and mending.
- Strong technical sewing skills.
- Strong organizational and communication skills.
- Ability to create relevant wardrobe paperwork in collaboration with designers & CS manager.
- Ability to work collaboratively as part of a design and production team for theatre and dance productions.
- Ability to work evenings and weekends.
Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
- MA or MFA in Costume Technology or equivalent professional experience.
- Advanced skills in costume construction, crafts, wigs, and make up.
- Experience with draping, pattern-making, and tailoring.
- Knowledge of new costume technology – CLO3D, Computerized Sewing and Embroidery, etc.
Accountabilities:
- This position takes responsibility for their own work.
- Provides work direction and problem-solving assistance for student workers in the Costume Studio and student wardrobe crews.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to drive to off campus storage facility and complete some supply shopping.
- Climbing, reaching, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting occasionally up to 50lbs, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and other repetitive motions. Close visual acuity.
- Standing and working at a table for extended periods of time.
- Sitting and working for extended periods of time in various environments, including tight and confined spaces.
- Constantly operating machinery, including power tools and heavy equipment such as industrial/commercial sewing machines, industrial sergers, heavy duty irons, craft equipment, dyeing equipment, and other equipment associated with the Costume Studio.
Environmental Conditions:
- Occasional high temperatures, noisy environments, and poor ventilation.
- Working in dimly lit spaces (backstage) during theatrical productions.
