Job Description

Millersville University is accepting applications for a Technical Coordinator.

This position reports to the Asst. Director of Production and Facilities within the Office of Visual and Performing Arts (OVPA) and provides comprehensive technical, production, and live event support for a full schedule of internal and external events at the Ware Center in downtown Lancaster, PA as assigned by, and in coordination with the Asst. Director.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Set up, operate, and maintain, lighting, sound, and video systems for theatre, dance, music, and other productions and projects
  • Assist guest designers and artists with technical matters.
  • Serve as production crew chief, technician, stage manager and board operator for events as assigned. Assist with event setup and tear down.
  • Operate, maintain and safeguard the technical assets of the Ware Center, including supervising the use of lighting, sound, and video equipment, and the use and maintenance of stage facilities.
  • Design lighting, audio, and video as needed for internal and external events.
  • Facilitate live audio and video recording and editing, live streaming, and live video elements for Ware Center and Client productions and events as required.
  • Work with Asst. Dir. and Production Coordinator to plan and determine the necessary technical support, such as lighting, sound, video, crew allocations, and scheduling for work calls, for rehearsals, events, and performances, and supervise the implementation of approved event plans.
  • Read, interpret, and implement artist riders, stage plots, input lists, and lighting plots.
  • Attend regular production meetings.
  • Orient staff, faculty, students, renters, and visiting production companies to safety, technical characteristics and other areas of operation.
  • Operate and supervise the use of motorized rigging systems, as well as other theatrical rigging as required.
      • Arrange for the repair and replacement within budgetary constraints.
      • Perform preventative maintenance on equipment.
      • Assist in identifying, organizing, and implementing improvements and upgrades to building spaces and systems.Monitor the condition of equipment including lighting, sound, and rigging equipment.

 

  • Create and maintain technical paperwork including, but not limited to:
    • Inventories.
    • Technical specifications of venues.
    • Equipment replacement schedules.
    • Technical operation/training manuals.
  • Purchase and maintain expendables inventory.
  • Assist in the training and supervision of student and part-time workers.
  • Maintain equipment and equipment storage in a neat and organized fashion to promote a clean and safe workspace.
  • Attend rehearsals and productions in order to supervise and assist in the technical aspects of mounting the show.
  • Work cooperatively with faculty, staff and student workers, the community and clients in events, project and productions.
  • All other duties as assigned.

 

Required Qualifications

  • BA in technical theatre or related field, or commensurate experience in high-level professional production.
  • Three years of recent professional experience in performing audio, lighting and/or video production for theatre, dance, or live music. One year of post-secondary technical training in lighting, sound or video may be substituted for one year of experience.
  • Experience in the basic repair and maintenance of live audio equipment, and conventional, LED, and automated lighting systems and equipment.
  • Basic electronic troubleshooting and repair.
  • Experience in leading crews in the successful implementation of technical production for live events.
  • Strong knowledge of general stagecraft and technical troubleshooting.
  • Proficiency in:
      • programming and operating computerized lighting consoles (ETC Ion and Element).
      • programming and operating digital and analog audio consoles (Yamaha, Midas).
      • using software such as Vectorworks, Lightwright, Pro Tools, QLab, and Adobe Suite.
      • live sound and recording techniques.

     

  • Working knowledge of networks as they apply to live event lighting and audio systems.
  • Excellent oral, written, interpersonal communication and organizational skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook.
  • Evidence of a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Successful interview.
  • Successful completion of three background checks.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in an educational production environment.
  • Experience in theatrical rigging and carpentry.
  • Experience with BSS, Concert, and Extron control systems.

 

Essential Functions

  • Work is performed in a variety of environmental conditions – heat, humidity, rain, snow, sleet, windstorms, etc.
  • Work is both indoors and outdoors all year round.
  • Work environment may be dry, wet, humid, noisy from other construction activities or operation of building equipment.
  • Will encounter presence of dust, odors, debris, chemicals, mold, ACM, lead based paint and other potentially hazardous materials.
  • Ability to work on man-lifts at or above heights of 20 feet and catwalks above 20 feet.
  • May have to work in cramped spaces or otherwise uncomfortable positions in the performance of assigned tasks.
  • Must be able to wear Personal Protective Equipment, when necessary, hard hats, respirators, eye protection, hearing protection, etc.
  • Ability to sit or stand for long lengths of time.
  • Must be able to lift/pull/push up to 50 lbs. without assistance and up to 75 pounds with assistance.
  • Must be able to visually perceive details relevant to the job, with or without a reasonable accommodation.
  • Must be able to audibly perceive information relevant to the job, with or without a reasonable accommodation.
  • Able to reach and lift above shoulders, have full operation of arms and hands, squat, stoop/bend, stretch, twist, have fine and gross manipulation of hands, simple and power grasp, and twist hands and wrists.
