Freelance Research Assistant
Los Angeles-based contemporary artist seeking a freelance Research Assistant to aid with the collection of archival material for a forthcoming film.
This person will research and gather archival video and photographic records focusing on culturally impactful moments in America, particularly for African Americans, from the 1970’s to the present, covering topics ranging from film and television, to politics and public health, along with specific museum-captured documentation of artist talks and openings. Preliminary knowledge of this subject matter is required, and previous research and interest in this realm is preferred. The candidate should have experience securing copyright and obtaining licenses. Existing knowledge of documentary film production is a plus.
Daily work schedule can be flexible, however hard deadlines must be maintained. This position will require the candidate to work remotely with his/her own computer. Hourly rate will be commensurate with experience.
Other responsibilities include:
Conducting extensive research into topics defined by the artist and his team
Sourcing various video materials related to the project
Corresponding and liaising with external parties to request materials
Obtaining permissions and copyright clearance for video records
Maintaining accurate credits for all documentation
Ensuring obtained materials are appropriately formatted (a thorough understanding of video codecs)
Qualifications and requirements:
Strong research skills
Experience performing research in libraries or archives is preferred
Excellent communication and organizational skills
Ability to work independently with close attention to detail
Experience securing copyright and obtaining licenses
Professional and friendly demeanor
Ability to implement and manage multiple timelines and projects
Proficiency with computers, Microsoft Office, Google Drive/Docs, and Adobe Premiere Pro/Media Encoder
