Job Description

The Boston Arts Academy seeks an exceptional Music Teacher who is highly qualified and knowledgeable to join our community of teachers, learners and leaders. This candidate will cultivate a safe environment for students to achieve their musical and creative potential and ensure that each Boston Arts Academy student has an exceptional musical education. This candidate will be responsible for creating dynamic lessons and learning experiences to ensure their students are challenged and primed for growth. Successful candidates will have a strong music background with expertise in guitar and/or electric bass guitar performance, a demonstrated expertise of teaching, and experience working with young musicians.

This is a part time adjunct teaching position.  The candidate will be paid bi-weekly based on an hourly rate of $55-65/hour, depending on experience.

The position is for the school year 2024-2035, which begins on September 5th, 2024 and ends on June 23, 2025.

The schedule is as follows:

Monday 9-11

Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday 9:45-11:45

Thursday 8:30-9:30 Music Department Meeting

Friday 9-11

TOTAL HOURS/WK:  11

Responsibilities:

  • Maximize the quality of music instruction including private and group lessons
  • Be sure the students are learning the fundamentals of music, not just songs
  • Create and document thoughtful lesson plans
  • Lead Music combos that include: Piano, Electric Guitar, Bass Guitar & Drums
  • Plan, execute and lead/co-lead music performances throughout the school year
  • Lead and/or Cultivate specialized music ensembles
  • Communicate regularly with parents on progress of students
  • Interact with parents and students regularly by being visible and accessible via Google Classroom, E-mail and Aspen

Skill Requirements:

  • 4 + years’ experience teaching and/or performing music professionally
  • Knowledge of music theory and curriculum design
  • Excellent ability to deal well with a wide range of customers and other people
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Very strong customer relations skills
  • Resourceful and good problem-solver
  • Works well under pressure
  • Ideal candidate is a working musician who also has formal music school training
  • Enthusiastic, flexible, patient, and positive demeanor
  • Good judgment a must
  • Passion for teaching

 

Skill Sets

Below are the qualifications expected of a music teacher:

  • Proficiency in playing the guitar and/or electric bass guitar
  • Ability to teach another person how to play the guitar
  • Reliable interpersonal skills for one-on-one and group music lessons
  • Deep understanding of music theory, music education, and general music
  • Functional knowledge of sheet music composition
  • Appropriate communication skills for high school students

 

Qualifications – Required

  • Education:  Bachelor’s Degree
  • Ability to meet the Standards of Effective Teaching established by the Boston Public Schools as outlined above.
  • Current authorization to work in the United States – Candidates must have such authorization by their first day of employment.

Qualifications – Preferred

  • Experience playing Double Bass
  • Experience teaching in urban schools.

BPS is particularly interested in candidates who are fluent in one of BPS’ official languages: Spanish, Cabo Verdean Creole, Haitian Creole , Chinese, Vietnamese, Portuguese, & Somali.
  • In order to best serve all students, BPS prefers all core content teachers to be certified in their subject area and one or both of the following: Moderate Disabilities, English as a Second Language (at the appropriate grade level(s)).
