Pay: $60/hr teaching rate plus $30/hr admin and meeting rate

 

Brooklyn Children’s Theatre (BCT) is seeking highly creative and experienced teaching artists to lead our weekday afterschool classes.  Each class is led by a team of 1 Director/Choreographer and 1 Music Director. The team mounts a production of a short musical play each semester, featuring a cast of 18 students.

BCT’s mission is to empower youth through musical theatre, reimagining arts education by centering the whole child and prioritizing belonging and equity. We cultivate a collective of empathetic and creative young people who seek equity in every space they inhabit and are dedicated to building a brighter future for all.

As our work is strongly based in equity, belonging, and inclusion, we especially seek applicants who have deep connections to communities of color and lived experience of an intersection of identities.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Trained in the performing arts
  • College degree or professional equivalent
  • Arts education experience
  • Experience in lesson planning
  • Strong collaboration skills with keen interest in working as part of a team
  • Experience in social justice and equity initiatives preferred
  • Proficiency in piano and the ability to accompany young people
  • singing
  • Ability to teach vocal technique

 

Music Director

Responsibilities include:

  • Music Direct BCT’s Fall ‘C2’ class: Thursdays, 5:15-7:30pm, October 10, 2024-January 30, 2024 with performance dates: January 31-February 2, 2025
    • Teach vocal skills at an age-appropriate level in collaboration with a teaching team (Director/Choreographer and Director’s Assistant, Stage Manager, Intern, etc.)
    • Include all students in a fun, collaborative, and inclusive experience, incorporating practices learned at BCT professional development sessions on Teaching Artistry, Trauma-Informed Education, Equity, Inclusion, & Belonging, and others.
    • Build a semester-long schedule outline before classes begin.
    • Meet with teaching team (referenced above) weekly to create and submit lesson plans in advance of each class to BCT’s Artistic Producer.
    • Prepare and perform piano accompaniment for performances.
    • Work with small and large groups of children on music, running lines, and leading other activities.
    • Get the show ready for production.
    • Rehearsals at BCT’s Studios, 540 President Street, 1D, Brooklyn NY 11215.
  • Teach ‘Audition Workshop’: Fridays, 3:45-6:15pm, September 13-November 22.
    • Choose and assign singing material to prepare students in 4th-12th grades for school auditions.
    • Provide vocal coaching to students.
    • Accompany students on the piano for a taped audition.
