Pennsylvania College of Art & Design (PCA&D) seeks an experienced and accomplished full-time faculty member to join the Live Experience Design & Production (LiveX) department to teach courses in one of two areas: Staging/Set Design and Production or Visual/Media Design Technology.

Staging/Set Design & Production professor will teach the program’s staging design and production sequence and other courses as needed. They should have experience and expertise in several of the following live event disciplines:

  • Stage or Set Design
  • CAD Drafting
  • Previsualization
  • Stage or Set Construction
  • Modular Staging Systems (TAIT Magdeck or Similar)
  • Temporary Demountable Structures
  • Up and Down Rigging
  • Use of MEWPs and Working at Height
  • Use and Maintenance of Electric Chain Hoists
  • Flown and Ground Supported Truss Structures
  • Automation (Kinesys or Similar)

Visual/Media Design & Technology professor will teach the program’s Visual Design & Technology sequence and other program courses as needed. In the context of this industry, “Media” refers to any visuals on display in front of an audience or camera, including live concert screen content design, multi-screen installation, multi-camera broadcast screens production, theatrical projection and video design, virtual production, broadcast AR, real time content creation, immersive installation and related creative technologies. 7

The Visual/Media Design & Technology professor should have experience and expertise in one or more of the following areas:

  • Camera operation
  • Vision mixing
  • Switcher/scalers
  • Media server programing
  • CAD drafting
  • Previsualization software
  • Creative pitching
  • Visual/media system design
  • Visual/media technology and hardware
  • Content creation (real-time, reactive and pre-rendered)
  • Virtual/augmented/extended reality producing for the live event industry

PCA&D’s Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in LiveX combines interdisciplinary professional education in art and design with advanced study in live event and experience design, production, and technology. As a professional degree, this degree ensures students obtain practical and professional knowledge in their field of study. More than half of the degree is dedicated to the major program, and major courses are offered through a transformative, collaborative partnership with the Academy of Live Technology at Rock Lititz (ALT at Rock Lititz), which embeds student learning within the live events industry and facilitates hands-on, project-based learning using industry-leading technology and facilities. Students study art and design at PCA&D’s Lancaster City campus and pursue advanced entertainment industry coursework at ALT at Rock Lititz’s educational facilities in Lititz, Pennsylvania.

PCA&D faculty are highly engaged and student-centered educators as well as active creative practitioners and industry professionals. The College values the faculty’s professional/industry experience and connections that can be leveraged to enhance curriculum and expand students’ career development through guest artist/lecture programs, industry engagement on campus and in the classroom, and other cocurricular activities.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate expertise in developing and teaching college-level courses, conducting course and program-level assessment of student learning, and facilitating student access to career pathways through their industry networks and connections.

They will also be able to design a thorough and sequenced curriculum that covers multiple areas of their concentration area while leveraging industry connections to fill curricular needs outside the candidate’s area of expertise. The PCA&D/ALT at Rock Lititz definition of “live event industry” live event industry includes concerts and concert touring, special events, award shows, large scale corporate events, virtual production, themed entertainment, sporting events, art or advertising installations and immersive experiences, and performing arts events including theater, dance, and opera.

Responsibilities

Full-time Faculty duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Teaching 18 credit hours per academic year
  • Support student engagement and support, which may include mentoring students, coordinating internships, industry experience, and developing cocurricular activities
  • Support the department chair, dean, and provost’s collaboration with the ALT program director and staff in both LiveX program operations and strategy, including curriculum development and assessment, industry engagement for student opportunities, industry engagement for guest/visiting artist and expert cultivation, and facilities use
  • Engaging in academic assessment
  • Contributing to student reviews
  • Collaborating with Admissions to recruit prospective students and review their portfolios
  • Participating in shared governance, which includes attending department meetings and engaging in departmental work, participating in Committee of the Whole, providing service on College committees, and collaborating with other college divisions in fulfillment of faculty duties
  • Contributing to and/or participating in College events and co-curricular activities appropriate to the position, including Commencement, Senior Show, Orientation, Colloquium, Gallery events, Admissions events and department events

 

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates should hold a terminal degree in a relevant field. Equivalent professional experience may be considered. Candidates should have both collegiate teaching experience and professional experience in their concentration area. Candidates should ideally have well-established connections and networks in the entertainment industry.
