Artistic Associate
Job Description
Primary Stages, an award-winning non-profit Off-Broadway theater company, seeks a dynamic, energetic, and dedicated professional to join our team as an Artistic Associate. Reporting directly to the Artistic Director, the Artistic Associate plays a pivotal role in realizing the artistic vision and direction of the company, with key responsibilities in Literary Management, Artistic Development, and Production.
Under the leadership of our new Artistic Director, Erin Daley, Primary Stages stands at an exciting juncture in its 40-year history. We are seeking an Artistic Associate who is eager to embrace the opportunities and challenges of this moment and grow with us as we continue to cultivate a radically welcoming home for artists, audiences, and staff alike. Key Responsibilities
Literary Management
- Oversee the Literary Management process, including managing the Literary Database and coordinating a team of volunteer readers and interns.
- Collaborate with the Artistic Director and Literary Team to read plays, attend readings and productions, and solicit work from agents and artists.
- Write script coverage reports and manage correspondence for submitted plays.
Artistic Development
- Provide administrative support for Primary Stages’ Artistic Development programs, including The Dorothy Strelsin New American Writers Group and Echoes Writers Group.
- Line produce the Fresh Ink Reading Series and other developmental readings as scheduled.
- Collaborate with the Artistic Director and General Manager to develop and manage budgets for all developmental activities.
Production
- Support the production process for all shows, acting as a liaison between agents, the creative team, venues, and Primary Stages staff.
- Attend production meetings, technical rehearsals, and previews as needed.
- Host talkbacks with patrons and students, and assist in facilitating other audience engagement events as required.
Institutional
- Maintain and cultivate relationships within the industry, both in New York and regionally, with agents, artists, administrators, and other theatrical colleagues.
- Write and edit copy to support our Artistic Programs, including program notes, grant applications, speeches, etc.
- Help out at special events and perform other administrative duties as needed.
Desirable Attributes and Interests:
- A passion for playwrights, new plays, and new play development, with knowledge of the New York and regional theater landscape.
- A strong personal aesthetic that they can use to advocate for outstanding work and artists within the overarching vision of Primary Stages.
- Experience in producing/line producing readings, workshops, and full productions.
- A collaborative spirit with excellent interpersonal skills.
- Proficiency in Google Suite and other administrative tools.
- Ability to take initiative, be flexible, and work independently as well as within a team.
- A Bachelor’s Degree, Associate’s Degree, or equivalent experience.
- Access to a reliable internet connection and the ability to participate in Zoom meetings.
- Availability to attend rehearsals, readings, events, and productions in person in NYC.
Physical Ability:
Work is performed primarily in a home office environment and is mainly sedentary in nature. The job will include talking, sitting, hearing, and repetitive movement associated with keyboarding. Will need to be able to attend some rehearsals, readings, productions, and events in person with occasional evening/weekend hours.
Primary Stages is an Off-Broadway not-for-profit theater company dedicated to inspiring, supporting, producing, and sharing the art of playwriting. Since our founding in 1984, we have produced more than 140 new plays and have garnered numerous awards and nominations. We have developed and produced work by Theresa Rebeck, Kate Hamill, Billy Porter, Charles Busch, Tanya Saracho, Sharon Washington, Horton Foote (including the Tony-nominated Dividing the Estate), David Ives, A.R. Gurney, Donald Margulies, Terrence McNally, and produced the original productions of In Transit (James Allen-Ford, Kristen Anderson-Lopez, Russ Kaplan, and Sara Wordsworth), which transferred to Broadway in 2016, and Danai Gurira and Nikkole Salter’s In the Continuum, which went on to tour the U.S., Africa, and Scotland.
Beyond our productions, Primary Stages supports playwrights and develops new works through artistic and educational programs such as the Einhorn School of Performing Arts (ESPA), the Dorothy Strelsin New American Writers Group, the Echoes Writers Group, our Free Student Matinee Program, and the Primary Stages Off-Broadway Oral History Project.
COMPENSATION:
This is a permanent, part-time position, with a base schedule of 20 hours per week. The hourly rate will be $31-34/hour depending on the candidate’s level of experience.
