Cheekwood is a 55-acre American Country Place Era estate in Nashville, Tennessee, that operates as a Botanical Garden, Historic Home, and Museum of Art. Built in 1929 by the Cheek family who amassed their fortune, in part, through the Maxwell House Coffee business, the estate was gifted and opened as a public institution in 1960. Today, it features 11 distinct gardens, a one-mile woodland sculpture trail, an 8,000-piece permanent art collection, and a Georgian-style Mansion with historically furnished rooms and galleries.
The Assistant Curator / Curator of Exhibitions supports the Vice President of Museum Affairs & Chief Curator with curatorial needs, including development, planning and implementation of temporary and permanent collection exhibitions ; assists curator in researching, recommending, contacting and making arrangements with future artists, studios, and galleries to secure timely, appropriate, and engaging installations for indoor and outdoor exhibits; holds curating responsibilities as needed, including contemporary exhibitions and programs and the Artist In Residence program; creates original, well-researched content for interpretive materials, exhibition content, publications, website, social media, and presentations where appropriate; coordinates interdepartmental logistics and programming for current and upcoming exhibits and installations, both traveling and Cheekwood-organized; serves as primary contact and resource for staff regarding exhibition schedule and content; may redirect inquiries to appropriate Museum staff when needed; assists in management of Museum of Art operations including preparation of purchase approvals, coordinating third-party payments, and making arrangements for events in Museum of Art spaces; supports the liaison between the department and the Art Committee; maintains and organize materials relating to historical research, and work with the Collections Manager/Registrar to ensure proper protocol is followed for information gathering and filing and completes administrative tasks as deemed necessary.
The ideal candidate will have prior experience in a museum, gallery, or cultural institution; possess an advanced degree (M.A.) in Art History, American History, Museum Studies, or related field; knowledge of museum protocol relating to collection handling and exhibiting; familiarity with Museum Registration program or database; ability to speak publicly on topics relevant to work and Cheekwood; strong organizational skills; knowledge of contemporary art and proficient in computer skills including but not limited to Embark Collections Management system and Microsoft Programs.
