Job Description

The Production Manager/Technical Director is a 12 month, full-time position. The PM/TD oversees all production team members and is the leadership role of Performing Arts Department’s productions. This role is responsible for creating production season calendars and deadlines, creating and maintaining each show and shop budget, managing a team of production staff, and overseeing rentals. In addition to administrative duties, this role will serve as the master carpenter for all PAD productions, traditionally four (4) theatre and three (3) dance productions per year.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  • The drafting, construction, installation, storing, and striking of all theatrical productions being put on by the Performing Arts Department. Determine the best way to construct, rig, and install stage scenery in order to realize scenic designs for simultaneous productions.
  • The PM/TD will create a build and load-in calendar upon receiving the final design package and will communicate the calendar to the rest of the production team.
  • Be the onsite supervisor at all tech and production weeks.
  • Create and reconcile production season budget, facilitating contracts for outside hires and invoices for production materials, turning in paperwork in a timely manner to the office manager. In collaboration with office manager, manage rental requests as they arise.
  • Creating, communicating and maintaining the production calendar with deadlines and due dates for designs, materials, and final changes.
  • PM/TD will ensure compliance with all safety requirements and will advise staff when changes need to be made. Facilitate regular trainings on equipment and machine/tool knowledge with professional and student staff.
  • Provide a comprehensive learning experience for students serving on construction and running crews by training, instructing, and supervising students to include standard methods and operation of the theatre machinery and rigging, gripping of scenery, and duties associated with technical support for live theatre including standards of professional conduct.
  • Coordinate with Edison Team on events and programming to ensure both entities operate collaboratively during the year.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Working Conditions

Ability for a flexible schedule; working evenings and weekends for all scheduled technical rehearsals.

Preferred Qualifications

  • B.A. or B.F.A in theatre with professional experience in technical theatre and production management.
  • Five plus years of professional production management/technical direction and skilled master carpenter experience.
  • Excellent supervisory and community building skills.
  • Strong communication and organization skills, ability to work effectively as a team.
  • Experience in budgeting specific to Theatrical productions.
  • Knowledge and experience in the training and management of student workers or staff.
  • Proficiency in Autocad and/ or Vectorworks in communicating technical drawings/details with designers.
  • Experience with rigging, ETCP Theater certification a plus.
  • Experience with welding.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree and three years related work experience or equivalent education and experience.
