Full-Time Visiting Associate Director for Arts Impact Assessment
The College of Fine and Applied Arts at the University of Illinois seeks a Visiting Associate Director for Arts Impact Assessment to launch and lead a ground-breaking new initiative aimed at improving understanding of how arts programs achieve social impact and transformation.
Across education, non-profits, municipalities, and community development, support for the arts increasingly depends on demonstration of impact and social change. Early efforts to this end focused on economic impact, but recent research supports an ever-widening understanding of how the arts change lives, neighborhoods, and regions. With federal and philanthropic support increasingly dependent on plans for evaluation, and approaches to evaluation broadening to include qualitative as well as quantitative analysis, arts programs require assistance to find the right approach for their goals and values.
The Visiting Associate Director of Arts Impact Assessment will lead this new effort to provide that very assistance, equipping arts programs within and without the university with the latest research-based assessment methods. Reporting to the Dean of the College, and with the support of a Research Assistant Professor, this position will develop strategy, implement programs, and cultivate key networks and partnerships over time.
The Visiting Associate Director will work closely and collaboratively with faculty, staff, and public partners to increase the demonstrable impact of the arts by leading the development and dissemination of these research-based evaluations of impact. Strategic responsibilities will include grantwriting and other activities to sustain the initiative and its partners, applying the assessment results to identify and propose more meaningful and impactful arts programming. Supported efforts internal to the university will include individual faculty engagement as well as larger-scale educational and community work at the Krannert Center for the Arts and Krannert Art Museum. Support for efforts external to the university will focus on strengthening university-community partnerships with responsibility and care.
In all efforts, this initiative is charged with taking a broad approach to the definition and scope of arts-based work, inclusive of traditional and experimental approaches, and even of public-facing humanities efforts such as community history, archiving, and storytelling.
To ensure full consideration, applications should be received by March 29, 2020.
