Founded in 1909 and affiliated with the Episcopal Church, The Bishop’s School is an independent, coeducational college-preparatory day school for 800 students in grades six through twelve located on a historic campus in the heart of La Jolla, just 10 miles north of downtown San Diego. With a student-teacher ratio of approximately 9 to 1, Bishop’s is known for academic, artistic, and athletic excellence while celebrating character development, diversity, inclusion, and belonging. Summary Description  

The Bishop’s School seeks a theater arts teacher (grades 6-12) for a well-established school drama program featuring both curricular drama classes as well as extracurricular theater opportunities for students, beginning August 2022. The theater arts teacher is expected to teach up to four classes including all elements of instructional planning, implementation, and assessment, and the fundamentals of acting, improvisation, and scene creation. The theater arts teacher is also expected to coach advanced students through their first directing experiences. The theater arts curriculum covers classic plays as well as introductory work in a variety of areas, which could include (but is not limited to) voice and speech, stage combat, classical text, improvisation, playwriting, movement for the stage, and children’s theatre.

In addition to teaching classes, the theater arts teacher directs two full-scale, extracurricular productions each school year and collaborates with other performing arts faculty and student artists on smaller-scale curricular and extracurricular productions.

Bishop’s faculty communicate regularly with students, parents and administrators on student progress and are regularly expected to supervise students in out-of-classroom activities during the school day and after school. In addition to teaching, faculty serve as advisors to students and offer daily office hours.


Desired Qualifications

A bachelor’s degree (B.A.) in theater or a related field is required. An M.F.A. in acting, directing, or education is desired. The ideal candidate will be knowledgeable and experienced in acting, directing large productions, teaching and curriculum design in the theater arts, and basic technical theater.


Candidates will have a demonstrated passion for theater arts and experience creating a classroom environment where students are comfortable exploring boundaries and taking risks. Candidates are expected to be enthusiastic about working with both middle and high school students and working in a collaborative environment with other members of the department.
