High Point University’s Department of Theater and Dance is searching for a Technical Director.

This position may be faculty or staff depending on expertise and qualifications.
Compensation commensurate. 9-month. Position to start Fall 2022 or Spring 2023

Responsibilities (for staff) include:
serving as Technical Director for the Department of Theater and Dance season of performances (includes 1 musical, three plays, and two dance concerts); producing cost analysis, construction drawings (drafting) and build/load-in schedules for each production in cooperation with other areas; assisting, where appropriate with lighting and sound, attending tech/dress rehearsals of shows as well as a majority of performances; teaching/mentoring lab hour & student employees in the technical production area that may include stagecraft, stage rigging, welding, drafting, and stage management; maintaining clean and safe scene shop, stage and storage facilities; maintaining an inventory of tools and shop equipment; building scenery and overseeing student crews; and working with the facility manager and department production manager.

Responsibilities (for faculty at assistant professor, non-tenure track) include the above with the addition of advising and teaching courses such as, Stagecraft, Fundamentals of Design, Theater Participation.
The Technical Director responsibilities will serve as the primary service function.
Faculty will be expected to develop a professional growth plan in consultation with the chair.
QUALIFICATIONS:

For Staff

Education

  • Minimum BA or BFA in Theatre required. Preferred 5 years of experience working as a technical director in a regional or university theater setting.

Experience and Training

  • Oversight of Scenic Construction in a large-scale shop environment.
  • Substantial knowledge of safe scenic practices and rigging.
  • Experience with building scenery off-site and transporting to the stage.
  • Ability to collaborate well and manage expectations.
  • Operation of CNC router table experience is preferred.
  • Work within budget to deliver scenery on time.
  • Ability to assist faculty as needed in theater spaces for class needs.
  • Willingness to work in non-traditional spaces on and off campus.
  • Student oversight and mentorship.
  • Preferred experience includes mentoring of students in scenic construction and life skills.
  • Some classroom experience would be appreciated.
  • Ability to work with students at various skill levels.
  • Oversight of student workers.
  • Training of student run crews in operation of scenery for shows.
  • Budgeting experience
  • Maintaining budget for all shows in a single season.
  • Understanding the needs of each production to determine the necessary budget for each area of production. Work with other area chiefs to determine this budget.
  • Production Management experience is preferred.
  • Renovation experience is appreciated, but not required.
  • Stage Management experience is appreciated, but not required.
  • University experience preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, Ability:

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • A positive attitude and the ability to effectively collaborate with others.
  • General knowledge of safe scenery construction, counterweight rigging, crew management, construction calendar management.
  • Need to have experience working with wood, metal, foam and plastics.
  • Need to be comfortable driving box trucks up to 26 feet.
  • Excellent organizational skills; strong interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency in Vectorworks and Vectric V-Carve Pro.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel. Strong Internet skills.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret policy and procedural questions.
  • Ability to organize workflow, coordinate activities and prioritize workload.
  • Ability to update Social Media pages.

For Faculty

Education

  • Minimum MFA in Technical Theatre required.
  • Preferred 3 years of experience working at the college/university level as a technical director/faculty member.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Manages all scenic needs for the department of Theater and Dance.
  • The Department produces 3 shows each semester. This usually works out to be 1 Musical each year, 2 dance concerts, and 3 plays.
  • Shows are produced primarily in 2 venues on campus. A 500 seat proscenium space is the primary location. There is also an 84 seat black box theater.
  • Assists during technical rehearsals
  • The technical director would oversee all scenic elements present for shows.
  • Experience with lighting and sound is highly sought after, though not required.  This would be very helpful to colleagues and students.
  • Works with a team of production personnel (faculty, staff and students) to design and execute shows.
  • The technical director must be able to collaborate with all areas, but especially with scenic designer.
  • Must be a clear and effective communicator.
  • A wide knowledge base of various theatrical practices is necessary to approach problems with creative solutions.
  • Manages the off-site scene shop.
  • Keep the shop operating in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Work with over hire vendors when needed. This could include carpentry, prop artisan, scenic charge or other areas.
  • Assists with budget management and creation.
  • Work with production manager and department head to create realistic budgets for shows.
  • Assist the department head with overall budgeting of department.
  • Manages and maintain props storage, construction and acquisition.

ACCOUNTABILITY:

  • Reports directly to Department Chair of Theater and Dance.  Works closely with all faculty and staff in the department of Theater and Dance.
