Job Description
Five Towns College is seeking a skilled and dynamic Technical Director to support both the Theatre Arts Department and the Performing Arts Center.

• Salary Range is $55,000 – $65,000
Founded in 1972, Five Towns College is a private, coeducational, non-sectarian institution of higher education. The College serves the cause of music, media, and the performing arts. Additional areas of emphasis in teacher education, business, and the liberal arts and sciences are strongly aligned with the College’s overarching relationship with the arts and communication. Located on a beautiful 40-acre campus in Dix Hills, the geographic heart of Long Island, New York, the College is a creative center for learning, which attracts artists and scholars from around the world who seek to be enriched by the unique educational experiences it offers. Five Towns College offers associate, bachelor, master, and doctoral degree programs in eight major areas of study. The most popular degree programs include music, film/video, theatre arts, business management, and mass communication. Programs of study begin twice each year in the fall and spring following a traditional academic semester calendar. Summer, evening, and part-time learning opportunities are also offered. The College delivers classes in traditional, hybrid and blended formats. The College holds an Absolute Charter granted by the New York State Board of Regents, and its programs of study are registered with the New York State Education Department. Five Towns College is institutionally accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE). The College also holds programmatic accreditation from the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM) and the National Association of Schools of Theatre (NAST). Its Business Division is a candidate for accreditation from the Accrediting Commission of Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP). Approximately 750 students enroll at the College each year, with about 200 residing on-campus in the Five Towns College Living/Learning Center. Position Overview:
Five Towns College is seeking a skilled and dynamic Technical Director to support both the Theatre Arts Department and the Performing Arts Center. This full-time role involves teaching, technical production oversight, administrative support, and facility management. The ideal candidate will bring expertise in technical theatre, production management, and instructional support while ensuring the safe and professional execution of all performances and related events.
Key Responsibilities:
Theatre Department & PAC Production Management
- Serve as Production Manager for Theatre Division productions.
- Assign run crew roles, source and contract production design teams, and manage rehearsal spaces and schedules.
- Supervise student crews in the construction and implementation of scenic, lighting, and costume elements.
- Oversee all technical and logistical aspects of performances held in the Performing Arts Center and Studio Theatres.
- Manage the production materials budget and track compensation for creatives.
- Attend departmental and college-wide planning meetings.
Instructional Duties
- Teach up to four courses per semester.
- Serve as Academic Advisor to all Design/Technology majors.
- Assist the Theatre Department Chair in course planning, academic programming, and classroom equipment needs.
Box Office & Front-of-House Operations
- Oversee box office software and coordinate student workers for performances.
- Manage ticket sales, financial reports, and customer service for patrons.
- Supervise ushering staff and ensure smooth front-of-house operations during events.
- Collaborate with graphic designers and administration to maintain contract-compliant advertising and ticketing platforms.
Facilities Oversight
- Maintain and oversee the safety and functionality of the Performing Arts Center, Studio Theatre, and scene/costume shops.
- Supervise student work-study crews and ensure safe construction practices.
- Maintain lighting systems, boards, and other theatre-related infrastructure.
Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in Technical Theatre, Theatre Production, or a closely related field preferred.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in a similar role, ideally within an academic or professional performing arts environment.
- Knowledgeable in stagecraft, lighting, scenic design, and theatre technologies.
- Experience with academic advising and college-level instruction preferred.
- Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills.
- Ability to collaborate effectively in a multidisciplinary environment and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
