Full-Time Sr. Director of Major Gifts
The Oregon Symphony currently employs 76 professional musicians, led by Music Director Carlos Kalmar. Each year, it engages dozens of guest conductors and artists, both popular and classical, to perform with the orchestra. The organization’s operating expense budget in FY19 is $21 million, of which about 80% is spent on programs. A full-time staff of 37—who are responsible for concert production, marketing, public relations, education, community engagement, fundraising, customer service, accounting, and financial reporting—manage the Oregon Symphony. The Symphony is governed by a volunteer board of directors, who last year contributed thousands of hours and personally contributed more than $2 million to support the organization.
The Oregon Symphony performs over 100 concerts per year at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall in Portland and throughout the community. It presents an annual end-of-summer outdoor concert in Portland and travels regularly for performances in Salem, Newberg, and smaller communities elsewhere in the area. It also produces award-winning education and community engagement programs. The Oregon Symphony programs directly serve more than 300,000 people annually and reach millions more households around the globe through its broadcast and recordings program.
The institution is supported by thousands of individuals, plus businesses and foundations, and receives funding from the Regional Arts & Cultural Council, the State of Oregon Arts Commission, and the National Endowment for the Arts. The Senior Director of Major Gifts reports to the Vice President for Development and joins a vibrant, collaborative development team. The Senior Director will supervise some staff, and carries a portfolio of significant donor prospects with a robust annual goal.
The Senior Director of Major Gifts will be one of two direct reports to the Vice President for Development. The position provides oversight for the major gifts program and steps toward creation of a planned giving program. The Senior Director will supervise at least one position.
The Senior Director of Major Gifts candidate will have 5-plus years of experience in development with demonstrated success in cultivating and closing major gifts, metrics and moves management, and interaction with boards and committees. Working familiarity with planned giving programs and strategies will be a plus.
The successful candidate will step into this key position at an exciting time. In FY18, we set a new record with $8.9 million in contributed revenue, up 6% year-over-year, meeting an aggressive goal. Our annual gala has set records for four consecutive years, with gross proceeds exceeding $1 million in both 2017 and 2018. The Board leads by example, sustaining a level of significant investment that has been an integral element of our success.
The Senior Director of Major Gifts provides leadership for the major gifts program ($4M-$5M), and steps toward creation of a planned giving program. Position focuses on two areas of responsibility:
- Leadership for the major gifts program, with an annual goal of approximately $7M toward team goal of $9M:
- Personal portfolio valued at $1.5M-2M+ (specific goal to be factored each year) comprised of donors and donor prospects at $4,000+
- Thought partner and process leader for VP for Development and President/CEO portfolio work, valued at $3M-4M+
- Supervision and mentorship of Foundation and Corporate Giving Officer with portfolio valued at $1.5M-2M+
- Creation of structure for a Planned Giving program in anticipation of an endowment campaign
Position requires the flexibility to work evenings and weekends as needed during concert season.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide leadership for growing the major gifts program, in close partnership with the VP for Development and the President/CEO. Focus on improvement of prospecting and stewardship initiatives and tracking.
- Manage relationships with assigned donors ($4,000+), developing individual strategies for each donor to ensure regular contact with appropriate Symphony representatives. Emphasis on face-to-face contact in 1:1 meetings, but also leveraging intermission receptions, pre-concert dinners, and phone and email communication.
- Supervise Foundation/Corporate Giving Officer, conducting regular meetings and reviewing project schedules to ensure progress toward goals. Consult/include VP for Development as appropriate.
- Co-manage Major Gifts committee of the Board, in collaboration with VP for Development. Develop and maintain systems and process to track Board member connections and coordinate activity with prospects.
- Create, activate, and manage Planned Giving Committee of both Board and non-Board members to establish the beginning of a formalized program to seek, secure, and steward planned gifts.
- Establish and maintain complete, timely, and accurate record in Tessitura of portfolio work plan following established data guidelines, and oversee direct reports in doing so.
- Take responsibility to ensure accurate gift entry, acknowledgments and pledge invoices for donors in assigned portfolio, and oversee direct reports in doing so.
- Develop and maintain a visible professional profile in the community as a representative of the Development Department and the Oregon Symphony.

QUALIFICATIONS: The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required to perform this job successfully. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
- Bachelor’s degree and 3-5+ years’ experience in Development. Demonstrated success in closing major gifts; working with boards and committees; and setting/achieving goals. Experience with planned giving methods and strategy highly desirable. Equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
- Demonstrated ability to inspire and motivate others, and to collaborate effectively across teams. Ability to effectively manage and grow relationships.
- Strong leadership and organizational skills; self-starter; ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously; adept at working in a fast-paced arts environment.
- Knowledge of and experience in implementing best practices in philanthropy as well as knowledge of current and emerging fundraising approaches that will broaden the base of philanthropic support and engage new constituencies;
- Outstanding communication skills, both interpersonal and written; excellent customer service focus and skills; ability to interact effectively and empathetically, and build rapport, with people from a wide variety of backgrounds.
- Familiarity with the use and applications of a donor database software, and of Excel and other programs in the Microsoft Office suite, are essential. Experience with Tessitura a plus.
- Quantitative and logic skills; ability to budget and forecast with accuracy. Positive, imaginative, and pragmatic approach to problem-solving.
- Sense of humor required. Passion for live symphonic music a plus.
