Job Description

This is a full-time position (32-40 hours/week). The person in this position reports directly to the Artistic Director and works closely with other staff to advance the organization’s mission, vision, and strategic goals through programs, communications, and community outreach. The ideal candidate for this position should have experience with exhibition and program management, arts education, and communications.

The Programs and Communications Manager will: 

  1. Manage the organization and creation of exhibition programming in tandem with other WSS programs
  2. Assist in the planning and execution of public programs
  3. Manage and implement marketing campaigns and a calendar of marketing activities that integrate digital and print media for exhibition, public and educational programs

About WSS Programs

WSS is primarily a school, and our educational program is central to our mission. Classes and workshops are offered all year long and during the day, evening, and weekend, taught by regular faculty as well as visiting artists. Classes are taught both in-person, outdoors, at museums or other locations, and online. As part of our effort to engage broader audiences, WSS organizes various in-person and online public programs throughout the year and participates in city-wide events. These include artist talks and demos, meet-ups, exhibition openings, fundraising events, outreach, and partner programs. Our exhibition space is a non-commercial teaching gallery that serves to further the pedagogy of the school. Exhibitions feature the work of faculty, visiting artists, students, alumni, and occasional shows curated by local outside curators that provide a stimulus for dialogue and inspiration and support DC area artists.

Responsibilities include creating exhibition programming and managing the marketing of exhibitions, and public and educational programs. The person in this role will also assist in the planning and execution of public programs. The incumbent will:

  • Create and oversee an 18-24 month exhibition calendar;
  • Participate in an exhibition selection committee with senior staff and faculty;
  • Work with the installation team to install onsite exhibitions;
  • Organize and attend exhibition receptions, artist talks, and related exhibition programming;
  • Coordinate with artists regarding all elements of the exhibition and its promotion including contracts, statements, price lists, press releases, images, and promotional materials;
  • Manage online exhibitions on Artsy, and coordinate sales of artwork (in-person and online);
  • Prepare all print and digital promotional materials for exhibitions, and public and educational programs including postcards, brochures, email marketing campaigns, and social media;
  • Manage and execute marketing, public relations, and advertising campaigns via email marketing, social media, and other forms of communication for exhibitions, and public and educational programs;
  • Manage updating information about educational, exhibition, and public programs on the WSS website.

The person in this position must be able to actively install and de-install exhibitions and is expected to attend and assist in the execution of other online and in-person programs which may involve bending, reaching, lifting, and moving artwork and other materials or objects. They are also expected to coordinate with the Managing Director on marketing efforts so that they align with the organization’s overall development and communications goals.


  • BA; training, coursework, or experience in art history, education or administration, communications, or marketing desired
  • Three to five years of professional experience in art or related field desired
  • Excellent writing and editing skills; excellent organizational skills with attention to detail
  • Familiarity with digital technology and experience with social media and emerging media
  • Ability to create workflows and manage calendars of events to establish and meet marketing deadlines
  • Ability to work on multiple concurrent deadlines and projects; and to think strategically and creatively in a deadline-oriented environment
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively
  • Self-motivated, flexible, and dedicated
  • Ability to climb, stoop, bend, reach, walk, sit or stand for long periods of time
  • Must be able to lift at least up to thirty (30) pounds
  • Basic knowledge of Adobe Design Suite desired
  • Knowledge of DC-area arts and cultural landscape desired
