Full-Time Production Manager/Technical Director of Theater, Dance and Performance Studies
New College, the Honors College of the State of Florida, seeks a Production Manager/Technical Director for our program in Theater, Dance, and Performance Studies (TDPS). Reporting to the TDPS faculty, the Production Manager/Technical Director is responsible for the scheduling, operation, and maintenance of the Black Box Theatre (BBT), observing industry standards for safe practices and directing users to observe institutional policies.
An interest in pedagogy is required for this position. Instructional responsibilities include one technical theater course per year as well as training and supervision of students working in major technical roles for on-campus productions. The position works closely with faculty and student directors and is expected to serve as technical director for at least one faculty-led production per semester.
The successful candidate should be experienced in working with and maximizing the capabilities of small intimate theater spaces similar to New College’s Black Box Theatre of approximately 50-60 seats, depending on the configuration. In addition, this position will require facilitating and providing technical assistance for performances happening elsewhere on campus, outside of the BBT. Supervision of student workers in the theater is expected, and experience working with student performers is required. Must be able to climb ladders, hang lights and sound equipment, lift scenery materials and use stage carpentry tools and machinery.
The ideal person for this job will be excited to work in a liberal arts setting with theatre and non-theatre students alike in addition to forging professional relationships in the community in order to connect those students with potential resume-building opportunities. Off-campus production involvement that does not interfere with assigned duties at New College and furthers experience and knowledge of the field is highly encouraged.
Preferred qualifications include an MFA in theatre with an emphasis in technical production or design, although other relevant degrees alongside equivalent experience and certifications will also be considered. Teaching experience at the high school or undergraduate level is preferred. The position requires competence in the major areas of technical theater (lights, sound, sets, and costumes); specialization in lighting and experience with Qlab, Vectorworks, and Lightwright software preferred. Beginning in August of 2019, this renewable 10-month appointment requires a flexible schedule (some evenings and weekends) and offers excellent benefits.
The successful candidate will contribute to the cultural climate of the campus and raise the profile of New College as an arts destination. We encourage applications from members of under-represented groups as well as individuals who have experience working with diverse student populations; women and minority candidates are encouraged to apply.
