Full-Time Private School Assistant Technical Director for Performing Arts
This Assistant Technical Director (“ATD”) position exists in one of our prestigious client’s private school campuses in the Los Angeles area. The school is a private secondary school which is located in the North Hollywood area.
This Assistant Technical Director position involves the creation and implementation of Lighting and Sound designs for all Upper School Performing Arts events along with some administrative events.
The job includes technical support of any and all school functions (assemblies, etc.) within the school theater as well as events held elsewhere including off-campus venues for some concerts.
A working knowledge of modern, digital sound and lighting equipment is required. Platforms include the Yamaha M-7, Behringer X-Air and X-32 mixing consoles and related wired and wireless vocal and instrumental microphones; DMX systems lighting systems such as the ETC ION-1000, Black Magic video switchers or related video switchboards; Box Office software and management, i.e. Seat Advisor or Brown Paper Tickets; a working knowledge of a CAD-based software such as AutoCAD or Vectorworks; a working knowledge of projections systems and the various cables and adapters.
Facility with ladders and lifts, familiarity with theatrical rigging, tools and terminology and excellent communication skills are highly recommended.
Candidates should have a zeal for working with adolescents of all skill levels and must possess the patience to teach and coach them in all areas of technical theater.The teaching of classes would be shared with the Master Carpenter on staff and would involve discussions, demonstrations and class participation by enrolled students in the execution of set, lighting and sound designs for Upper School theatrical productions.
Enrolled students in the Technical Theater class would be directly involved in most aspects of the stage productions and would constitute the “running crews” for these events.
The position requires high-level knowledge of computerized lighting control systems including ETC Ion, ETC Emphasis, ETCnet2,3, and intelligent lighting fixtures. Large-venue sound design and mixing skills are also required, including use of the Yamaha M7CL-48 mixing console. A typical large production will use up to 20 wireless lavalieres and 20 auxiliary microphones.
The Performing Arts Calendar includes the following extra-curricular theatrical productions, each with a rehearsal schedule of 7 – 8 weeks: (typically after school Mon-Thurs and on Sundays)
One full length musical production
One full length non-musical production
The Playwrights Festival
The Advanced Dance Concert
These events play for 3-4 performances, typically for one weekend only.
Performing Arts Department curricular events in the school theater can require after-school rehearsals during the week of their performances, as well as live sound mixing and recording. Of these, there are:
3-4 Choral concerts/yr.
3-4 Jazz concerts/yr.
3-4 Orchestra concerts/yr.
These typically play for one-night only.
In addition, recitals of curricular Dance and Acting course work (2-3 courses each) are performed once at the end of each semester in their respective studio spaces. These can require after-school rehearsals during the week of their performance. Some technical support is often required.
For all of the above events, the ATD would be required to be present for any production meetings, technical rehearsals, and otherwise “as needed.” Also they will be expected to share knowledge and resources with other departments in a collaborative manner.
In addition, the sound and lights designer may be called upon to provide technical support for all-school assemblies (4-5/yr), guest speakers 4-5/yr), parent’s association meetings (1-2/yr), admissions dept. events (4/yr) and student run benefit shows (2-4/yr) and special events.
Compensation for this year-round position would be in the range from $55,000 to $63,000 depending on experience plus an exceptionally full benefits package that is effective on the first day of employment.
Travel and lodging reimbursement will be extended to candidates who attain the personal interview level of the process. Relocation assistance is also extended to the hired candidate.
